Hope some kind travellers will suggest Brussels hotel for us,

Ideally between Grand Place and Central Station?

In 2014 I stayed at the Warwick Grand Place (former Royal Windsor)

My most recent stay, (Nov 2019) in Brussels was at the Ibis Brussels Center Gare Midi ( dumpy area, clean hotel and room, good for one night stay)

Other hotels I have stayed in were
Hotel Chelton and Hotel des Colonies. Both near a metro stop, both good. IIRC , Colonies had a good breakfast.

Recently (Oct 2019) my brother stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn, no complaints.

It is up to you to check the prices

Hilton Bruxelles Grand Place or Novotel Brussels off Grand Place.

Myriam and Cdnyl, thank you both for your responses.
I remember reading just this about the area around Midi, and that the neighborhood surrounding Central is much more pleasant.

Yes, it is. I would never stay around Midi.

Just to report back, we booked at the Floris Arlequin https://www.florishotelarlequin.be/

Found a recommendation posted years ago I think by yk and it's one of the few hotels in our price range with that excellent location.

That is a good one, I will keep in mind for the future.
Thanks.

We had made a non-refundable reservation at this hotel, the Floris Arlequin ... and then corona virus hit.
The hotel is pro-actively closed thru the first few nights of our planned stay and I expected to be offered the chance to rebook.
So I was most pleasantly surprised to receive a full refund, posted to my credit card today.

They didn't have to do this but I am grateful and hope to make the visit next year.
