Brussels Frites Fiasco

Went to a ~good~ restaurant in Brussels called Lola in front of Place Sablon the other night.
Had what to my amazement were the soggiest frites I'd ever eaten.
Sent them back twice,still bad.
I thought Belgium was famous for its fries.
Only excuse I can think of is it was a Sunday and perhaps the regular chef was off.

Good god, Bill, and you’ve lived to tell…my, my! The horror, the horror. Don’t know when I’ve read such a gripping yet touching and informative post.

Bill has been spending too much time eating Mickey D's food. Probably likes those frozen fries.

Lola is one of the chic places to eat in Brussels, a shame about the bad frites (the frites are excellent a couple of doors down at Au Vieux St. Martin). I hope the staff treated you well, they can have a lot of attitude.
BTilke (Brussels)

This tragic tale makes me glad that I can't afford "good" restaurants and have to get my frites at humble friture/friterie stands, where they've almost always been wonderful.

What a shame! I hope you tried again somewhere else. We had some of the best Moules et Frites this past month in Montreal! And I was thinking how much I would enjoy Brussels!

Another proof that "chic" does not imply "good".

Aye, Bill, yer story has touched me heart! And what, sir, what about the poor kinder in Bruessels, Bill, what can we do fer them, poor l'il tykes, all sad'n'depressed 'cause they aint got no good tatties betwixt 'em? Sorry, Bill, but I must 'ave somethin' in me eyes, naw, I ain't cryin', Bill, but dern itall, man, how kin sech a thing be fair to the wee ones? The overwhelmin' sadness of it all, and you, Bill, ya poor bugger, travelin' all that way an' endin' up with a sorry ass plate full of soggy frites, lo, not just "soggy frites," Bill, but the "soggiest frites I'd ever eaten!"

Damn their eyes, Bill, I'm wif you, ol' mate, should ya feel the need to go back over and kick som Belgium ass Bill, you jus' call on me, yer ol' freind Angus McShamus. Are ye sure Bill that them damned cooks wasn't Englishmen?

You can buy the best frites (with mayonaise!) in the booths in the street (near the stations, market places...)
In expensive restaurants they are never so good as the ones you can buy in the street. Try also a "curryworst special".
or "stoofvlees" (carbonnades flamandes) on your frites. Mmm...real Belgian!
