Brussels Dining
 

Going to Brussels Oct 10-13. Staying at Hilton near Central Station. Would like some restaurant ideas. Not fine dining. Just good food and not too pricey. Want to try typical Belgian food too. Heard the places on / near Grand Place are a rip off.

Here are the restaurants I had on my itinerary:

I ate at Aux Armes de Bruxelles (known for their mussels) and Les Crustaces (known for their lobster). Both were very good. I don't remember the costs but you can look them up on Yelp or Tripadvisor or their websites to get an idea.

Oh, sorry... I guess Nos. 5 and 6 aren't really restaurants, are they??? LOL!

For something a bit different you might want to visit the Matonge neighbourhood for a meal. It's the African area and it's a really vibrant and fun area--we ate there twice last time we were in Brussels.

It is le Roi d'Espagne just in case.
La maison du cygne is quite expensive.

Aux armes de Bxl is quite nice, Léon is an institution in Belgium (and created the chain 'Leon de Bruxelles' in France).
I went to 'la quincaillerie' a lot of years ago last time, good to see they are still renowned.

Very close to your hotel, I recommend
'Chez Vincent' (round the corner from 'Léon de Bruxelles')
And la Taverne du passage - a well situated but non touristy restaurant. Basic Belgian food 'Brasserie' style.

Chez Vincent is basic 'restaurant' stuff.

ps : Brasserie is less elaborate than a restaurant (and nomrally cheaper). Chez Vincent is halfway imho between brasserie and restaurant :-)

Belga Queen's oyster bar is fun although I find the restaurant over-rated (despite the cool auto-frosting glass bathrooms).

La Maison du Cygne is very good but expensive. You were well advised to avoid the restaurants around The Grand Place. They are tourist traps.

There are some really great restaurants in the Saint Catherine area... All of which would be within walking distance or one or two subway stops from Gare Centrale. You could easily walk over and pick from whatever strikes your fancy!

Check out La Morte Subite which is not far from the Hilton if you are looking to have a drink in a charming 1920s kind of joint but be prepared to share it with readers of Lonely Planet!
