Bru na Boinne and trim
 

Is it reasonable to drive from Belfast in the morning and do both Bru na Boinne and Trim Castle in one day? We would then spend the night in Trim.

Just logged on...haven't made the drive from Belfast but seems reasonable. Where staying in Trim? Not aware of much lodging. Trim castle is impressive and of course likewise Newgrange, Knowth.

Just remember that the tickets to tour the tomb at Bru na Boinne are limited. You'll want to get there early so that you can: 1) get tickets and 2) not have to wait a long time for your tour. We arrived soon after the Visitor's Center opened for the day in the month of April and still had to wait an hour for our tour. That worked out fine because we spent that hour touring the center's exhibits, but I sure would not have liked waiting any longer.

Certainly Bru na Boinne is worth seeing. It is in a rural area but I do see some eight hotels in Navan. Some are guesthouses like our B & Bs in U.S. and friendly places. Also I locate a few choices in Trim and surprisingly I note Bellinter House. This was where years ago we stayed for a week as a group which was then a nun's retreat center. I wonder though if you might be headed to Dublin and thus many lodging choices.

You might consider Smarmore Castle Hotel which is very close to Bru na Boinne and not terribly far from Trim. If you are headed toward Dublin, though, it would require backtracking. http://www.smarmorecastle.com/

We did stay one trip in a guesthouse near Ratoath.

There is a modern hotel just across the road from Trim castle. I have not stayed there, but have had a reasonably good lunch in the hotel, and gone in for coffee. It seems fine.

We had a very nice 1 night stay at Highfield House in Trim. It's across the street and about 1-2 blocks down from the castle. It was good to be able to park and walk to the castle and some restaurants. Excellent breakfast also.

The tombs, I believe you refer to Newgrange and Knowth, are something to see, but good luck getting into Newgrange if you are not on a bus tour... The tomb at Knowth is not as restored, but is very interesting. Trim is a pretty little Norman town with an impressive recently restored castle on the river, and a few nice B&B's.

Ditto on what RuaMor said for ourselves, Knowth not Newgrange. Equally fascinating though.
