As a vegetarian, I don't buy leather, nor anything that I know contains animal products. And yes, I am adult enough to know that I can't always know what stuff is made of, and purity is not a realistic goal. I eat honey, and wear wool and silk, so would not pass a vegan's scrutiny.

Still, it disappoints me when animal products are used unthinkingly, especially when they require the death of the animal. And if the amount used is that small, is it really necessary?

And finally, the old "don't you have anything better to worry about" argument is a pretty low one, isn't it?

Much as I have some sympathy with Hindu temples banning the new £5 I just wonder how much meat is already on all the old notes, if nothing else from human contact, passing into tills, sitting in shops. There is a lot of beef about.

These £5 are designed to last longer so will have longer to "pick up" but are also far less absorbant, so should stay cleaner.

Then of course any £5 kept in a wallet with any other cash will contaminate it. Those wallets been mainly made of cow...

Everything you touch in public must have some animal-based residue on it - from other humans for one thing-if a vegan shakes someone's hand they probably get more animal stuff than by touching the new fiver.

One thing I remember about my trip to India was how filthy some of the rupee banknotes were that I received in change. No telling what all the hands they passed through had touched! If "purity" is an issue, surely polymer banknotes would be better. You can even run them through the washing machine without damage.
