I see a lot of information on the forum about driving through Brno, but can anyone advise if it makes a worthwhile destination for a weekend getaway?

Any insight and opinions would be welcome. Am just interested to find a town where there is enough to explore and keep myself entertained for two days. (and it looks like Brno might fit the bill, with castles, churches, etc.)

My take on Brno from 2004:

"Brno had a gratifying shortage of foreign tourists, having no particularly exciting sights, and I enjoyed wandering the streets and admiring (and photographing) the many Art Nouveau buildings in the city center. My main objective in Brno, thought, was the nearby National Park and its caves - very popular with Czechs. Getting there involved both a train and a bus. ... The caves turned out to be mediocre, even with an underground boat ride, but the countryside, forested mountains and a deep gorge, was beautiful.

My Brno hotel, the Pegas, comfortable and a good value, was located above the Pegas bar, where I tried the local liqueurs (high in alcohol but short on flavor)."

Whilst I like Brno it is not high on my list of destinations in the Czech Republic. However, I am not a city fan to begin with so it may be desirable to others.

There is no lack of things to do there - it is not a dull place!

Wait - the more I think about it the more I sort of change my mind. Brno is not a large city and is far less crowded than Prague. Its historic sites are interesting and it is surrounding by lovely forested areas. Still not my favourite but I can see its appeal.

It's the second largest city in the CR, it's not a small town. I think almost any city of that city can be interesting for two days, even if it isn't the most exciting place.

That is the home of one of my favorite Czech composers, Leos Janacek. There is a museum with his works and artifacts, and also the repository of the Moravian Museum Music archives in a museum in Brno. If you don't care about Moravian folk music (which is fascinating and very enjoyable to me) or classical composers, I guess that would be a pass. It's housed in Janack's old organ school. The Moravian Museum is the second largest museum in the CR.

Austerlitz is only about 10 miles from Brno, the site of a great Napoleon victory, if you are interested in military history.

Has anyone ever done the brewery tour at Brno Cerna Hora?

The only references I can find for it on-line seemed to be linked to stags dos. How does one book directly?

this blogspot may be able to give you info about the brewery in Brno.Pivero's blog is excellent and i have visited many of the places he lists and tried quite a few of the beers on my many visits to the Czech Republic
I have never visited Brno but may try a visit on my next trip over to Prague in April.
