brittany and normandy
next year I'll be taking the chunnel train with car from England to calais for one week returning by chunnel train from calais. Any suggestions how I should divide the 6 days driving the area of Brittany and Normandy in France (and Giverny) and how and where I should book hotels or bed and breakfasts. Will I need reservations in early Sept. or can I just drive and check in somewhere when I'm ready?
Would appreciate any info you can give me. Stringbean |
I think early September you do need reservations. We love driving that coastline. We start at Honfleur.

You do need reservations in early September unless you are very relaxed about the quality of lodgings and willing to spend some time going from one to another to find a vacancy - and this is doubly true if your trip includes a weekend. Cigale has mentioned my favorite town in Normandy, Honfleur. There's a delightful bed and breakfast there in the historic district, the Cour St. Catherine, gigalis.com. Suggest you consult the Michelin green guides for Normandy and Brittany. They present all of the major sights, suggest routes and give driving times. What are your interests?
Scenery more than monuments? Food more than art? Villages more than cities? Coastline more countryside? History more than shopping? Let what you like most be your guide. |
Ypoui might be interested in my trip report after the Belgian section. Prices given are probably out of date.

If you wawnt to visit the World War II landing areas, that will take at least a day our of your six. Giverny is very near Paris and will take you far east in terms of seeing the rest of Normandy and Brittany.
So the first thing to do is get the Michelin green guides for Normandy and Brittany and start checking out the sights you want to visit. Until you do that it's hard to say how you should divide your six days. In early September you will definitely need lodging reservations--it's still high season. |
