my passport expires at the end of this month it is a british passport i am a LEGAL ALIEN sounds like i come from outer space i live in california and wondered where i go to get it reneweed do i have to go to los angeles to the british embassy or can i do it on line or is there somewhere else i live in orange county thanks dennis

I think you should call the nearest British Embassy RIGHT AWAY and find out what you need to do.

You need to get in touch with the British consulate in LA.

Hello furtinan, yes you do need to go to the British consulate or embassay right away. Simone has given you the address etc.

My SIL who is an legal resident (with the so call green card) is a citizen of Italy. When his Italian passport was a couple of months from expiring he went to SF to the Italian Consulate (or maybe it is the embassay I don't remember). Anyway it took most of the day to be interviewed, go somewhere else for passport photos, return etc. But he had his renewed Italian passport in something like 7 days (a miracle in my opinion as generally the Italian government does not move that fast).

Anyway, just to be on the safe side plan a day for this. Best wishes to you.

You can renew on line. They will then post you a form to sign. Don't know how long it will take from the US but I renewed last year (from the UK) and had my new passport within 10 days.

Make sure you read the section on changes in particular photographic changes as the passport office has become very picky and the photographs must be on a white or cream background and show head and shoulders only. They will send it back if it is not right.

cambe-you live in Northern Ireland, right? This is not the same thing, simply renewing your UK passport as a citizen while in the UK, and Furtinan's situation-his situation is like LoveItaly's SIL-different requirements/processing obtain here.

So Furtinan, assuming, as I must, that your Alien Registration Receipt Card (the so-called "green card") is valid and NOT expired (and they DO expire, usu. after 10 yrs., so you have to keep on top of that as well) then it should not be too much of a problem to go in person or call the British Consulate in LA to find out what to do in order to get your passport renewed, given your Permanent Resident status. In addition to any other requirements that may be imposed, you will have to get your passport renewed at the British Embassy in Wash. DC, so that will take some time for processing.

However, even if your old passport were to expire before you get your new passport issued, that would not be a big deal, as it is your green card that determines your eligibility to stay in this country, and unless you're planning to travel outside the US in the next couple of months, that won't be a problem. (that's the reason you became a Permanent Resident of the US in the first place, right? to live here and enjoy most of the rights of a US citizen of this country). But since it will take a few weeks, I'd get on it first thing. (you may or may not be interviewed at the consulate in the process-this is a country-specific requirement).

Silly me I thought renewing a curent British passport would be the same whereever you lived.

You have to download form C1 from British Embassy website at http://www.britainusa.com/sections/a...01&a=25302, complete it (including credit card section for fees) and send with your existing passport and photos to the British Embassy Washington (passports are only issued there). You need to allow 4 weeks for your new passport - if you are travelling before that, send in a copy of your travel ticket or itinerary.

Hi Spygirl, that is exactly what my SIL did, he called the Italian Consulate in SF, left a message (they never answer the phone!). They called him back, he went there, was interviewed, completed the paperwork etc. had passport photos taken and so forth. Everything was sent to Rome. Italian Passport was mailed to him. But it may be different procedures of course for other European countries.

And yes, the "Green Card" has to be renewed every ten years unless one has acquired US citizenship of course.
