The armrests are slightly wider than normal coach, but not as wide as those between business class seats (on other airlines - BA's New Club Woild is laid out herringbone-style - feet to face.) The tray tables in WT+ seats are in the fixed arms, also business-class style, so there's no raising the armrests to stretch out or snuggle if one is so lucky.
American Airlines' 777s are being refitted with more seats, thereby undoing their wonderful "more room throughout coach" seating plan (mass insanity IMO.) However, early reports are that some of the coach rows in the refilled AA planes are more equal than others, i.e., pitch varying depending on row between 31" and 34" or even 35" - don't know which ones. In addition, there's a chance if you're going around TG that you could still get an MRTC 777, which has 18" wide seats and 34" pitch, but with raisable arms and 2 outboard rows of 2 seats on each side.
Thus - if you're lucky - you might be able to fly on AA in economy and not have that bad an experience compared to WT+ on BA, but at a much lower price.
What I would suggest looking at is AA's morning departure from ORD, which arrives in London around 10pm. Use some of the savings from the WT+ fare to Priceline a hotel at LHR or in the city, then spend your days in indie status, returning from LHR at your leisure. The daytime flights (at least for us) are much, much easier to take than the overnighters, you can sleep in a bed instead of an airline seat, and save money in the process. BA doesn't have a morning departure from ORD (they do from JFK, so that could also be an option) but WT+ on a daytime eastbound flight would be quite acceptable. But with a daytime flight, even the AA coach chairs are not bad.
