British Air Dumps Detroit-London Flights
 

For years now folks in the Detroit area or from feeder cities could take British Air to London Heathrow - but no more after next March as BA is scrapping the one daily flight due to economics

NW still goes DTW-London Gatwick but who wants to go into Gatwick unless forced?

Who wants to go to LHR unless they're.... ?

what's wrong with flying into Gatwick? I've done it and thought it was just as convenient or more than Heathrow.

I much prefer Gatwick to Heathrow.

Anyways, for a while BA operates this DTW flight from LHR with an extenstion to IAH, so that people from Houston can also fly to LHR (Houston is one of the cities where under the last agreement - Bermuda II or something - that can only get non-stops to LGW; whether it's CO or BA).

But starting next March, BA will move the IAH flights to LHR, so no need to have this extension from DTW. DTW itself doesn't seem to be able to support the BA flight.

I think that BA found it couldn't compete pricewise with Northwest and therefore didn't get the traffic. Plenty of Detroiter's go to London -- but are unwilling to pay BA extra to do so.

Well pardon my Gatwick gaffe - i was referring to typical business travelers who are the main attraction of airlines - ones with continuing flights, many more of which are from heathrow

but accept my apology about Gatwick - if going to London i actually prefer it too and they don't seem to have the snafus Heathrow has had lately

So let me retract that unexplained comment.

Another vote for Gatwick - you'd have to have some major access problems, or just be plain mad to pick Heathrow over Gatwick.

the press report said BA was flying like a 195-seat capacity plane and NW had about 285-seat so was more economic for them

I always preferred British Air to NW if i had a choice.

So IAH-DTW-LHR was more popular than IAH-LGW for Houston travelers?

I believe the IAH-DTW-LHR is popular with those with a connection on BA to elsewhere - particularly Africa and Middle East, where currently there's no non-stop service from Houston and few non-stop service from anywhere in the US. [Emirates is starting IAH-DXB this winter.]

So, even though it has an extra stop, it avoids the LGW-LHR transfer.
