Britain: Regular Passenger Steam Trains Return...
for first time in decades - not tourist-only special but regular scheduled passenger service, over parts of the scenic Carlisle to Settle line:
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/...carlisle-video Regular fares, including discounted ones, are used like on any regular passenger train. Q-Is this the only regular passenger train in Europe today? |
A. No.

What about the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen?
http://www.hsb-wr.de/en/mehr-erfahre...hmen/about-us/ Well worth a visit, it runs daily timetabled steam journeys year round between real places, as well as the spectacular trip to the top of the Brocken. |
The Chiemseebahn between Prien and Stock although I am not sure it runs year-round. I wouldn't classify it as the "usual" so-called "heritage" railway but perhaps for some it might be considered as such.
|
I understood this was only for today to mark the reopening of the line after repairs, not that it will be a regular feature. There are, of course, plenty of heritage railways running steam services.

BBC News America said it would be a regular train - last night but reading the details says for 'three days' - thought it would be impractical for regular service. Thanks for the correcto! http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-38963632 |

Well yes... I've ridden that back in DDR days and thought now the steam only went to Brocken -but it is still on regular runs on the whole line. So yes it seems to be. The Prien-Chiemsee boat dock thing is a totally tourist shuttle. |
500,000 tonnes of landslip just north of Armathwaite has blocked the Settle-Carlisle line since January 2016.
The line is supposed to reopen fully on the 31st March which will be a great relief to me |
