The comment on "1 liter duty free" keeps popping up on threads about bringing wine into the US, so I did a little digging as to the cost of more than 1 liter.
This from US Embassy website Duty rate for wine - 3.8 to 23.1 US cents per liter. I'm going to bring back a case or so, and gladly pay $2 duty upon return. |
Thanks for adding a little "cred" to those of who have experienced - - many many times - - the attitude that it isn't worth the bother for them to collect it.

I've always declared my wine on my customs form when returning to the U.S. NEVER have been asked to pay the tax when I bring more than the allowed tax-free amount.

How about having a case or two of wine shipped back from Germany to the USA?
Anyone done this? Is it even possible? I'm wanting to send my Mother (in sunny, hot, humid Florida) a case of wine (maybe an assortment) from the Rhein (1 case) AND Mosel (1 case). It is my Mother, expense is of minimal concern (to a certain point). Since this area is my first waypoint on our journey, I really can't be lugging as little as a bottle or two over the remainder of our travels, as if it would even make it past day 5 :). Your thoughts please. MvK |
I bought a case of wine in Italy at a small winery in Montepulciano. They also shipped wine, and I believe the cost was about 120-150 Euro per case. They told me the customs certificates read olive oil. So I'm sure you could, and most wineries would ship for you, but don't know about the costs/customs going to Florida. ((b))

Dali - with the limits of liquids for carry ons now - I do not think it would work no?
|
dawnnoelm, this is an old thread. At the time dali posted, one could do that. I carried on several bottles, but now use those styrofoam boxes and send it on the airplane with my checked baggage. ((b))

I have traveled many times with up to 4 bottles in my checked luggage. Just roll them in a pair of jeans and pack them tightly without having them touch glass. Pack shirts and other clothing around them. Another trick is to put sochs over the bottle.
As long as they don't move around, you should be fine! |
