bringing food back to the US from Italy
When we fly back to the US next week, we would like to bring back with us: 2 kg. of sundried tomatoes, sopresata salami, and an opened jar of black truffles. I am trying to deduce what the exact rules are from the various US gov't websites, but am having a hard time finding out what is allowed and what is not. The sundried tomatoes were bought at an open air market, and were not pre-sealed in a plastic bag, the salami is vacuum sealed in plastic, and the truffles were opened by us to taste. Any help on where to find specific guidelines would be great. Thank you!

Here is a link to US Customs for prohibited and restricted items.

The salami will be confiscated, the truffles will probably make it through in your checked luggage (liquid). Those dogs sniffing luggage in the airport aren't just looking for drugs.

I too doubt you will get through with the salami. We tried to bring vacuum-sealed sausage back from Paris last year and the little beagle dog sniffed us out and it got confiscated. Luckily the woman who took it was nice and didn't search our bags, but I've heard horror stories of people getting their bags completely searched because of this, causing them to miss their connections, so I would probably just eat the salami or leave it.

Hi Y,
Eat your sopresata salami. No meat products of any kind are permitted. Recently, we have had reports of foie gras also being confiscated because of Avian Flu. ((I)) |
thanks everyone for your advice. we are just going to leave it in the fridge in the apt. we are renting, and our landlord can enjoy it when he is here later this month. Oh well....
