Bring a copy of credit cards with you?

I've been reading different views on this one. One is to bring a copy of your credit cards. But I'd be afraid of someone getting their hands on it! Isn't it better to just bring all the phone numbers on how to cancel your cards if they would to get stolen?? What do you think?

You'll need to know the card numbers when you call. I have a journal and keep my addresses in it. I write the phone number and part of the card number. I put the rest of card number as part of a fictitious address in my list.

I'm sure you know that you should bring a copy of the first 2 pages of your passport and store it someplace other than where you have the original passport. In the event your passport is stolen, it will speed things up to have this photocopy.

I have hidden things under the lining of my suitcase and I keep my suitcase locked when I am away from the room.

schnookies, I leave a photocopy of my credit cards with my daughter at home. I take the telephone numbers on a piece of paper with me. Is that the best idea..I don't know. I have never had a problem so I haven't had to find out.

I call all my credit card companies before I leave on a trip. In those phone calls I advise them if my cards are stolen or if there are any problems my daughter is authorized to speak to them..them meaning the credit card companies. I do the same regarding my ATM cards.

Take the copies with you, OF COURSE. Leave some at home also. How could anyone use the numbers except by mail. You need the numbers PLUS you need the collect telephone numbers (NOT the 800 numbers) to call.
In the unfortunate circumstance that you do have a card lost or stolen let it be known that the CC company can issue one in a day's time if you demand it.
And, as someone else said, calll the CC company and tell them your itinerary or they may shut the card down for "unusual activity".

If you do not have your CC numbers, you can still call the bank and they can identify the card numbers through your Social Security number.

You would, obviously, need to have a telephone number to contact the bank.

I bought a 512 memory stick for my last trip to Europe. It is password protected. I downloaded copies of my passport, credit card information, reservation confirmation e-mails, directions, correspondence, etc. that I might need on a trip.

I write all the CC numbers and the telephone numbers on a paper, but I change one number of the CCs, so anyone finding it does not get the real numbers. Only I know how to change it to the valid numbers.

Also, on my hotmail account, I have copies of my passport, plane tickets, drivers license, and any other important papers which I might need.

Jed, credit card numbers are generated according to a mathematical formula that makes it fairly simple to deduce which number you changed and what it originally was.

Ask each bank or issuer to give you their non-1800 number for reporting problems, to make sure you can access them from Europe (not all 1-800 numbers work from there).

Budman: The memory stick is a great idea. Do you travel with a laptop, or would you have to use another computer to access the data in case of emergency?

Ah, the non 800 contact #...

About half of my bank have no clue that US 800 numbers don't work from overseas (yes, I know I have tried and I get you cannot call that number message.)

I have to be quite insistent to get non-800 from some banks. One bank claims they have no non-800 number and insists "it should work" -- no it doesn't.

I carry coded card numbers and the contact number on a sheet of paper. No need for the expiry date nor the CVV; they just add liabilities with no benefit.

Vera - If you carry a computer, you can simply encrypt the numbers and store them on it (this is what I do).

If you don't have a computer, you will have to use someone else's to retrieve your numbers from the memory stick. If you have to use someone else's, you might as well use it to log into your webmail accont and retrieve your documents, which you scanned and uploaded before you left home.

In other words: I see no point to carrying backup documents on a memory stick.

Robespierre - Does that mean, for any set of 15 numbers, there is only 1 possible sixteenth number? I am stunned!!

Someone on this board said they put all of their credit card information on a piece of paper and had it laminated and put it in their shoe. I laughed at this at first, and then decided it was a good idea. I have very sensitive feet, and we could have everything on us stolen or lost, but I would kill anyone who messed with my shoes! So in my right shoe, under my inserts, was the credit card info. in my left shoe, under the insert was some currency from whatever country we were in. I ended up having to take my shoe off to pay for a cab one night! It was very comforting to know we would not be caught without cash or credit card info. So, while I thought the suggestion was a little "over the top" at first, it was really a great idea! Gotta love this board and all of the creativity!

As you suggest, I wanted to scan my documents so I could retrieve them if necessary. However, on another thread, I thought some people said it was not safe to do this.

I opened a hotmail account. Do you know how I can securely store my documents? Thanks.

If you make a copy of both sides of your credit cards the non-800# is on the back. What is up with the problem of making copies of the card. Just put it in a safe place.

<<<<What is up with the problem of making copies of the card.>>>>

As the stated purpose, according to the OP, of the duplicate is if the other card get's stolen, then collect call telephone number would only be the required number to keep as the account on the stolen card automatically gets blocked/frozen immediately upon reporting.

A duplicate card or a copy of the account number in the hotel room simply invites another potential hazard of being stolen and illegaly used.

If you did that with a UK issued card it would give a thief EVERYTHING they need to create a fake card or buy things over the internat / mail order
