Brighton- must see/do ?
 

On my next trip back to London I'm going to finally take the advice of a local mate and visit Brighton for a day trip. Can anyone recommend a must see/do for Brighton (pavillion: a given, sea front: unavoidable of course), i.e. restaurants or pubs to visit...any guided walking tours, special secret spots, that sort of thing?

The free Art Gallery is worth a visit for the display of 20th centruy decorative arts - Art Nouveau to Scandinavian design.

St. Bartholomew's church is worth a visit.

There is an electric railway along the sea front to the marina.

The lanes, a walk along the prom to Shoreham, coffee at the meeting place which is exactly half way between Brighton and Hove.

Another suggestion if you have time is to take the open top bus to the Devil's Dyke, the view of the South Downs is great or you might want to walk to Rottingdean which is a small village in the oposite direction from Hove. There is a lovely church there and it was home to Kipling. A small museum and lovely gardens in what was his house. The view of the coast in this direction is very different from the flat prom towards Hove.

when are you going? i enjoy brighton all year long but activities and the atmosphere of the place varies greatly from summer to winter.

if you like veg food try Food for Friends or Terre a Terre. dr brightons is a good pub.

for some reason you hear more about the lanes but North Laine is much more interesting...don't confuse the two. kemptown (east) has the gay scene and some good cafes and guest houses. Hove (west) is the more posh area but not really worth visiting on a day trip.

sadly palace pier is almost fully submerged.

A question for walkinaround. I know the west pier burnt a year or so ago but I thought the palace pier was still going strong. Am I wrong?

my mistake...west pier is the one that has fallen. palace is still going strong...i think i was just wishing it was the other way around!
