Brief notes on Romania

Ending a Romanian tour which was very successful. Just a few notes:

If you do not like rough toilet paper, bring your own.

ATM's are to be found in every large town. They are sprouting everywhere.

Gas stations are found at the entrance of any decent size town.

Large towns are developing commercial center with supermarkets.

Romanian money either gives the impression of being play money or that everything is terribly expensive. This will change as of July one, when the money will drop four zeros. But apparently some of the old money will remain in circulation for a while.

The main roads are fine, but secondary roads can be terrible. Double your drive time. Potholes and RR crossings are their version of speed bumps.

Speed in town can be strictly controlled. Let the others pass you. We were stopped for going 62 kmh in a 50 kmh zone. He let us go with a warning when he realized that we were not Hungarians but Americans. If someone flashes you on the road, it means cops are ahead. Drive with your headlights on.

Will you be doing a trip report? It would probably be a very interesting read!

Thanks for the tips. I'd LOVE to read a trip report (hint, hint!) as we are very interested in visiting Romania.

Michael, I look forward to a story too if you have one to share!

Hope you had a good time and while we may have had different experiences on some of your points, I could not agree with you more with the shock of how many zeros show up a bill the first time you see it.

Thanks for checking back in!

Spent 16 days in Romania during May. Great trip. Stayed in the Romanian version of B&Bs every night but 3. Clifton's trip report was very helpful. From Budapest to Budapest with Romania in between... 21 days and only met one American in Romania. Most of the places we stayed had never hosted an American. Language was no problem as hand signals for eat, sleep and drink and pretty international.
