Just a note, GB is the big island on the right.
UK is the country that includes GB and Northern Ireland (the top bit of the island on the left)
Hence the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland"
That the EU make us put GB on our cars when driving on the continent is just another unaware anti-British thing the EU does without thinking. Clearly we should instead have a smaller sticker that goes "UK#GB&NI"
For those on the continent I have added this link so that they can begin to use the correct names https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Termin..._British_Isles after all after 40 years you would have thought they might be getting it right by now.
Pulls tongue out of cheek.

I can go on and on...
It makes no sense...
It's us...not them...
Do you really expect everyone in the world to understand this nonsense?

<<We selectively include or exclude parts of the country as convenient (e.g. crime statistics). English contracts are really England and Wales. Scotland and NI are something different. Nationalism/patriotism is fine (and even 'cute') for Scotland or Wales but ugly and racist for England.>>
Walkinaround - you omitted [probably deliberately as this could go on and on as you say] the anomalous situation regarding rugby union, which is represented by a team from the whole of the island of Ireland whereas [so far as I know] in all other sports the RoI is separate from the North and the rest of GB.

The Ireland (n.b. not 'RoI') Olympic team sort of mirrors this. It represents the whole of the island of Ireland. This has been disputed over the years.
In practice NI athletes can compete with GB or the Ireland team that formally represents ALL of the Island of Ireland. I believe that most NI athletes choose to compete with the Ireland team rather than the team of their own 'country'. (country in quotes because the component parts of the UK are 'countries' as is the UK itself. Anything but clear. Anything but simple.

As you can read in previous messages, there are sufficient problems of identity between the english, welsh, scots, irish and northern irish. They all have a different relationship with the EU...
As canadians, you can only add to the general confusion, so I would advice you the remain in Canada at least till 2025...

walkinaround - I didn't know that about the Ireland Olympic team. I wonder if the same thing applies to all irish sports teams in that players from the North can play for either? Except Rugby where there is only the one?

oh nice one, xcountry. did you get a crystal ball as an early Christmas present? I do so hope that it's got a flaw in it.

At 50 (just) I’m having a midlife crisis.
I’m taking a one way flight to Bordeaux from Manchester and am going to cycle back, 4 weeks after Brexit.
I’m actually not overly bothered if they don’t let me back in.

lol, Dickie - tempting isn't it? i am going to the GTG in Valencia towards the end of March and my naughty imp says to me to extend my stay beyond the date on which Brexit is supposed to occur to see what happens. I confess that I'm rather too risk averse to try it though.

i really have had had enough of the B word.
The BBC are tonight suggesting that our troops will be on standby!
For what?!
To collect tariffs at Dover.
Or are they going to relive Operation Dynamo and repatriate lost souls like the two of us, stuck and besieged on the continent.

I know Dickie, i think we are all thoroughly fed up with it, but those who think that if we just leave we'll hear no more about it are deluding themselves as the results will make them wish they'd never heard the word [I'm not including you in that group of course].
And I agree that it's really unbelievable that troops are being put on standby. For what? Well, today the Bollocks to Brexit bus was held up in Durham by a group of yellow jacketed protestors who whilst sporting "For our country, the women and the children" were throwing eggs at the bus. And just over two weeks ago the "Save Brexit" march featured a gibbet and noose which were apparently destined for our PM. It can only get worse.
