I was one of those who nursed children for long periods of time (9 months, 18 months and 2 years) and encountered some of the same attitudes here in the US that people on this board are expressing. We actually had friends arrive for dinner once and comment, in shock, that they had seen a woman breastfeeding in public at a local shopping mall. C'est la vie. A nursing one year old is a baby who also eats finger food. Couldn't you keep him or her occupied with a piece of bread while you dine in a restaurant? If you need to nurse have that shawl or blanket available so you will be a bit discreet. Those of us who nursed will know what you are doing, but my guess is that the average man (or woman) on the street won't have a clue as to what is going on. I am guessing that is why so many people have said they've never seen anyone nursing in public in France.

Judging simply by the title of your post, it is apparent that you have very definate opinions on the subject so why are you even asking? You're not going to stop breastfeeding just b/c you may get a few stray looks, are you? Be discreet and most people won't even notice-it's not an ideal world and some people get uncomfortable with breastfeed in public.

spygirl: I think if you bothered to read my posts you would find that I am probably one of the least neurotic people on here - what offends me most is lack of common sense and an inability to make even the shortest trip without having to plan for every possible eventuality. In my dictionary, that would be the OED by they way, that HARDLY makes me hysterical and/or neurotic.

More to the point, I'm being accused of this by someone who thinks that people should stay away from London because of a few nutters.... Hmm..? Hysterical and/or neurotic..???

What bugs me about this thread has nothing to do with breastfeeding. Why I even read it is the (gasp) in the title. Clearly the OP was expecting people would be amazed and astonished about her plan to breast feed in France.

My complaint (I have seen this before with argumentitive posters on Fodors) is why ask a question when you have already decided what you will do regardless? Nothing anyone has posted in 60+ replies will make one iota of difference to the actions of starmom (not that I think it should, I'm just stuck on "why ask a question when you aren't going to listen to the answer?&quot.
