Breaking- Paris suspected gas explosion

The news is reporting a suspected gas explosion in central Paris. In the 6th. A building is destroyed.

It is of course possible it's just a case of bad maintenance.

Never assume malevolence if an event can as easily be caused by a straightforward cock-up.

I wonder if any Fodorites had an Air B&B reservation in that building.

The URL says it was a cooking school but no mention of that in the article...

No reports on CNN or Reuters, yet.

We have had 2 similar in NYC in the past couple of years. They were just urban issues- nothing to do with terrorism. In both cases the buiding exploded and there were deaths.

One was a restaurant that had illegally modified the gas cooking system in an unsafe way and the other was the fault of Con Edison - which apparently had put a gas line under too much pressure (that is too heavy a weight on top of the line(which are underground).

It was just a kitchen stove that blew up. Quite violently of course.

kerouac Apr 1st, 2016 04:58 AM

The building is still there.

The cooking school is down the street on Abbé Grégoire.

It was just a poorly maintained gas hookup. I wasn´t that far away, just the other side of rue de Rennes, and did not hear a thing.

We have explosions of various things in my city all the time (gas in houses, utilities, etc), they aren't exactly international news flashes.

Dukey1 Apr 1st, 2016 06:23 AM

Right, Christina. There's a hell of a lot of "gas" in "your" city.

Nothing on France 24, CNN, BBC, Irish Times...

The two addresses with a lot of damage are 4 rue Bérite and 6 rue Bérite, so if you have rented a vacation apartment there, you are out of luck for at least the next 6-9 months.

denisea Apr 2nd, 2016 05:35 AM

Thanks for clarifying what actually happened there.

Breaking news stories are almost always full of misinformation - they're meant to grab viewers/readers who will be sure to stay tuned. These reports are notorious for not providing accurate info, especially right off the bat.

Almost everyone in Paris would wonder about a very loud noise if they were in the immediate vicinity, but I don't see the point of repeating unsubstantiated reports on a travel forum.

I was wondering where exactly in the 6th. I've rented a beautiful apartment on rue du Cherche-Midi in the past and have taken a cupcake class at l'Atelier du gâteau which is right on rue de l'Abbé Grégoire. They posted on their facebook page they had been evacuated but would be open Sunday.

StCirq Apr 2nd, 2016 01:52 PM

Kerouac already pointed out the addresses.
