Breakfast in Dublin
 

Any recommendations for a reasonably priced breakfast place in Center City Dublin, within a short walk of St. Stephen's Green. Seems the hotels are charging in the $25 per person range. Looking to spend that for two. Any ideas are appreciated.

You may get a recommendation for Bewley's on Grafton Street which is fine. There's no way you'll stay in that budget if you have more than coffee and a roll/muffin. I went there a few times, coffee, juice, fruit and/or cereal were nearly 20 euro, and that was before considering the poor exchange rate at the moment. Not sure what you're looking for in the way of food, but if you get offered a decent breakfast for that price I'd take it.

Second Bewley's. I love that place. Excellent espresso, terrific atmosphere, good selection of breakfast food.

Bewley's is good, though there's usually a wait for a table.

One place I recommend you avoid is the Johnnie Rocket's on Upper Baggett Street. Though it's good here in Ohio, it was AWFUL in Dublin!

Amyb: You mean to tell me that coffee and a roll in Dublin costs $12. I'm beginning to appreciate the bargains here in Manhattan. Heck I can get coffee, eggs, hash browns, juice & toast for that price in Midtown. LOL!

There's so much competition in Manhattan
that prices for a lot of things are cheaper than they are in other world capitals. Also, everyone eats out all the time - which means there are lots of options in all price ranges. Finally, in the US our food (raw ingredients) is cheaper - often much cheaper than in any other developed nation - making our restaurant prices somewhat lower than in much of western europe.

Wow, am I glad we took an apartment this January in Dublin. Four blocks from St. Stephen's Green We were 4 and stopped at the corner store and for 20 euros. Eggs(free range)Bacon, bread for toast, butter, marmalade, coffee and tea were inthe apartment,but bought OJ, milk was enough for 4 persons 2 mornings. Rented from Harcourt Hotel.

As a Dubliner, I'd avoid Bewleys!! Greasy overpriced slop! (and I think I'm being kind!!). Odessa just off Dame Street does a lovely brunch - you can relax on the nice big sofas if you ask to sit downstairs. The Mermaid Cafe on Dame Street is also a good option (try the waffles - they're delicious!!). A little further out, down Baggot Steet towards Ballsbridge, the Espresso Bar is worth trying. Two that have been recommended to me (and within walking distance of Stephen's Green) are Nude on Suffolk Street and Lemon on South William Street - I can't give personal recommendations though as I haven't tried them myself yet!

oh...the place on Baggot Street is called Eddie Rocketts, not Johnnie Rocket's. I actually quite like Eddie Rocketts when I'm in the mood for fast food. I haven't tried breakfast there (and wouldn't!), but they do pretty good hamburgers!

Elephant and Castle in Temple bar do a good breakfast. Odessa is lovely but oit only serves lunch on weekends and I think its a bit pricey. There are tons of coffee shops off grafton street that would do the trick. For a more American or filling breakfast try Chompy's in The 2nd floor Powerscourt tonhouse behind Grafton Street its not expensive. They have pancakes and American style breakfast. Also Cafe Java, off Grafton Street does good coffe and breakfast.

I was in Odessa on Sunday and we got brunch. I think they don't open till 12.30 though! It is on the pricey side though - it was about €20 each, but yummy!!

I meant to say brunch not lunch! ahhh!

Bewleys try it once critic little hard on it as good as the hotels also powercourt town house at the back of Grafton st.also georges st arcade lots of places. also cafe near chatam row off graton st.

I think for many Irish people the criticism of Bewleys is from the fact of how it used to be better value and more accessible to everyone. They changed from cafeteria style a few years ago to restaurant service and it bombed. They converted back and now its just not the same and pricier.

It was a great hub for meeting friends, artists used to hang out all day drinking coffee and students. Now it would be frowned upon to hang out all day with 1 coffee. It was also a great place to go late night after the pubs closed for breakfast at 2:00am!

Also the food prices are higher and than previously and the food is just OK.

Overall, it is a beautiful place inside I would definately reccommend a stop for coffee and drinks but not for your main meals.
