Breakfast in Barcelona (?)
 

Quick Q:
How much can we expect to spend on basic breakfast (not at the hotel) - for a coffee and a nice pastry, or maybe a hot sandwich and a coffee?
We have an option of getting un upgrade to a room and a hot breakfast buffet for extra 10 euro per night for both of us(otherwise, it is 18 euro per person)
What do you think?
ALSO, Do we need to have cash for breakfast? In bakeries or cafes?

Cafe con leche and a pastry is the equivalent of $4 or $5--about the same or slightly more than in the U.S. I always paid in cash, but you could probably charge some places.

Just realized that you might not be from the U.S.--in that case, breakfast was probably 3 or 4 euros. I would say don't get the upgrade--pastries are great--most with chocolate--cafe con leche also good, and there are plenty cafes on every street.

Thanks. The upgrade seemed tempting (10 euros for 2 people for breakfast buffet at a 4 star hotel)- but in this case we would have to pay in advance.

Agnes: Try to have one breakfast at La Boqueria (the inside marketplace on the Ramla...as you walk in, there is a kiosk cafe ("Pixoto") that is super for bkfst. It's owned by the renowned Juan, in bow tie and clean white shirt..he will show you his claim to fame on the cover of a Spanish magazine...and the curried egggs made by his wife in a deep pot with assorted veggies is a classic...good coffee, too. Very inexpensive, relatively speaking. It's a treat.

The spelling of the lunch counter in the Boqueria market is Pinotxo. There are Pinocchio puppets hanging around the counter. Just a few stools, you wait your turn.

In Madrid in February, the hotel buffet breakfast was E13, and frankly more than we wanted, with all those tapas available.

so after the first morning, we had breakfast in the hotel cafe [separate from the breakfast restaurant] and for about E4-5 each, had large coffees, croissants, butter, & jam - which left plenty of room for tapas in late morning. they also had eggs for about E2, and more elaborate stuff too.

you will need cash, especially if you just buy a pastry in a bakery, but not much. are you planning on being like the queen and not carrying any money?

Nikki...great photo of my man Juan..just as I described him above. Thank you, Nikki...brought back Barcelona memories. We've sent a few friends to see Juan and all enjoyed the little Pinotoxo tremendously.

I appreciate all your input. It seems that most people would skip the hotel breakfast, and try different cafes, etc.

So, based on your suggestions,
I have decided to skip a breakfast buffet at the hotel, and I am anxious to try a variety of foods. And, HAVE YOU EATEN BREAKFAST AT CIUDAD CONDAL?
