Breakdown of areas in Rome...pls help!
 

Can someone please help me break down and understand the different area in Rome? We have an itinerary, and I do have a pretty good idea of where things are...I think? lol

Colloseum, Palatine and The Forum are all in one area pretty much...? Not close, but pretty much in the same area as the Termini.

Vatican City consists of the Vatican, St. Peters, Vatican museum, etc. It is also close to St. Angelo church...but is it across the Tiber River on the other side?

Jewish Ghetto...is this near Compo Di Fiori, and I thought that this was across the river. Is this also called Trastevere?

Piazza Navano is a square which houses several fontains, is also near the Pantheon, Spanish Steps, and Borghese Gallery and gardens, with other churches nearby.

Am I doing ok so far? Those are the main points with our week in Rome coming up. We have a huide book which I will use for other recommendations as well...just wanted to know the layout.

OK, Vatican.

Ok, Jewish Ghetto is near Campo dei Fiori...both are in Trastevere.

But ...Piazza Navona is not near Spanish Steps and it's far from Borghese Gallery (well, maybe it's walking distance for you...but a long one).

For information...Spanish Steps are not far from Trevi Fountain.

Have you consulted a map? That's what they are for. You can find plenty online by googling, and even better ones at a bookstore. Streetwise ones are touted by many here. And if all else fails your hotel will give you one when you arrive.

Neither are in Trastevere.

Campo de Fiori and the Jewish Ghetto are not in Trastevere. Trastevere is west of the Tiber, almost due south of the Vatican, and the Campo de Fiori/Ghetto area is east of the river, on the same side of the Tiber as the Colosseum and adjacent to an island, Isola Tiberina.

Actually, Samantha, you have got most things wrong so let's start from the top:

1. Get a map or go online to find a map of Rome -- it gets very easy from there....

2. The Termini station is not near the Forum. The Forum is the centre of Rome. When you walk out the eastern exit from the Forum, you are at (or nearly at) the Colosseum.

The Palatine is the name of the big hill -- 1 of Rome's 7 -- up against which the Forum is built. The access is just outside the Forum's eastern exit, mentioned above.

3. The Vatican does indeed lie across the Tiber. If you walk south from the Vatican, you will eventually reach Trastevere.

4. The Ghetto lies between Campo de' Fiori and the area of the Forum. It is not far on foot from Trastevere but the Tiber separates them. (The name means literally "across the Tiber").

5. Piazza Navona is near the Pantheon, from which the Spanish steps is, say, a 15 minute walk. The Borghese is quite far beyond that.

Now that I'm overlooking the itinerary, I'm hoping I planned ok.
I'm sure things will be easier once we're actually walking...

The only things I would add are:
if you want to cross the Tiber from Trastevere to the ghetto, it is a very pleasant walk via pedestrian bridges over the Isola Tiberina. The island should be easy to locate on your map. (I
know from another forum you have one!)

It is Castel Sant' Angelo, a fortress,not a church

Although you could walk south from the Vatican and "eventually" reach Trastevere,as tedgale mentions in describing the overall layout of the city, I would not recommend trying to walk that way--long and lots of traffic along the river. A nice route from the Vatican to Trastevere would be to take a taxi up to the Piazzale Garibaldi (great views of the city) then walk downhill to trastevere. On the way you can see the Fontana dell'Acqua Paola and San Pietro in Montorio, with Bramante's Tempietto (considered a model of High Renaissance architecture)

The Pantheon and Piazza Navona are very close to Campo de Fiori and the ghetto so you could easily combine a walk to these areas even though you have listed them separately.

I don't know the Streetwise map of Rome but if it doesn't label the different neighborhoods you might want to go back to the idea of another guidebook or go to a library and copy pages from a guide that shows how the different areas fit together. The ghetto probably won't be shown separately but you know where it is from this thread.

try googleearth.com It has a nice plotting feature so you can see exactly how far you have to walk from place to place.
