Braving the Crowds in the Lakes Region

Hello,

My husband and I will be in the lakes region the last week in September. Are the larger cities on each lake likely to be crowded during this time? Also, we are young (late 20's) and reasonbly fit. We are not serious mountain climbers, but like hiking. Any suggestions as to where to stay (city or lake) for the best intermediate trails?

Thanks in advance!

The crowds start to thin out by then---actually a good time to go.
The hiking options are good from any of the mid-lake triangle towns. If you have a car I prefer Menaggio. If train travel, I prefer Varenna. I am not sure about trails, but you can get a good workout just with the natural terrain.
