Brand new guide book "24 Great Walks in Paris"
I dont' even know if it's PC for me to ask this here, but has anyone used the new 2008 "24 Great Walks in Paris" put out by Frommer's?
I'm a big fan of Frommer's "Day by Day" books that came out last year, but I liked this book because it was from cover to cover walking tours, no hotel or transportation information or practical tips or other fluff. Just 24 tours on foot with 2-3 meal recommendations for each tour. We also like specific walking tours, ie "start here, turn there, stop here" etc, because I feel like they take you to places you might pass up, even if they are small and insignificant they might still be of interest. Has anyone used it? I'd love to know your opinion! Any criticisms? Strengths? Thanks! |

I thought it might stand for "tisk, tisk, tisk" since I was asking about a Frommer's book on a Fodor's sight! LOL Good to know!

I was helping you out by bringing your post to the top (number 1 spot) to make it more visible and get a response or two. I seldom tisk tisk anyone! :)

Haven't seen it yet, but I'll take a look when I go to B&N this weekend.

There are half a dozen or more self guided walking tour books. All have their plusses and minuses. It helps to be somewhat familiar with Paris when choosing one.

If you're interested in something like this, pls also check out CityWalks Paris. It's a boxed set (3 x 5 cards) of walks all over the city, complete w/begin/end metro stations, restaurants/bistro, and sites along the way. They also make boxes for London, DC, Chicago, not sure what else. I just bought the Paris set for our trip next week. You can just pick a card, get to the beginning point, and discover an entire new neighborhood.
|
Forgot to say that 'Paris Walks' covers 50 routes in and around the city. I believe that there are comparable numbers for other cities in this series. Gave this to my brother (who's lived in DC for 20+ years) and he's discovered neighborhoods he had never explored, so I'm hoping it will be as useful in Paris.

I looked at the card set but was disappointed-- they concentrate more on shops than architecture/scenery.
If you read French, there are 33 walks (Parcours d'architecture) on the Paris.fr site: http://www.paris.fr/portail/Urbanism...rtlet_id=14633 |
I'm going to try some of the "Paris Bus Cards" I ordered a while back:

The Parcours d'architecture site does have an english option. upper right hand corner 'en'
|
Their English section doesn't have the parcours. Only a very small portion of the website is multilingual.

Fifi - don't know what card set you saw, but the City Walks: Paris one is great and certainly did not tend to the commercial. Hope you enjoy it, Pittsburgher. We had fun sitting with it in the evening, choosing a couple to take gallivanting the next day.

Seamus,
I must have bad luck with the few that I randomly drew out of the sample deck at the bookstore-- I'll have to look through some more of them. It certainly is a more convenient format than heavy books. |
