I have to color my hair every 3 weeks also. I mix my colors - 2/3 light ash brown and 1/3 dark ash blonde. I don't mix until I am ready to use and then pour into the developer. Sometimes I do a 1/2 and 1/2 - all depends on the state of the gray. The color doesn't go bad unless you mix it or put it in the developer. At home, I just put the covers back on and save for the next color or touch up.
Anyway, I'm with you, Dawn. Have to cover that gray at home and away. So, I take two unopened bottles - one of each color and the developer - no box. These 2 bottles are securely wrapped with several paper towels which I later use when I am in the hotel, villa, apartment when I am coloring. I put elastics around the paper towels and then put these 2 bottles in a plastic sandwich bag or two and then in a zip lock bag. I put the developer in a plastic bag also. I make sure that it is all secure and well wrapped. I usually put this in the outer compartments of my suitcase in with other things like mousse, gel, other hair or cosmetic items. Before packing this outer compartment, I slip in a plastic trash bag and then put the items, which are in zip lock bags of various sizes, inside the plastic trash bag which I close with a twist thing and tuck all inside the compartment. When I arrive at my destination and in need of color, I use the plastic trash bag as a cape (I sometimes cut a hole for it to go over my head and sometimes cut arm holes also) a so I don't get myself or pjs or whatever all spotted. I also take along an old, thin towel which I use to dry my hair after I rinse it out. This towel is thrown out along with the unused hair color since I do the mixing thing. I have actually a few times re-wrapped the unmixed color and taken it back with me the same way. Don't tell my husband, but sometimes I sneak the hair color into his suitcase since he usually is well under the weight limit and then I don't worry at all about breakage! It all sounds complicated but it is very easy to take the hair color with you. If you use one color, it is even easier. Having said all that, I have also bought hair color in France and Italy and it worked just fine, too! Good luck, Dawn, and have a well-deserved wonderful, relaxing, wonderful trip! |
The trash bag tip is EXCELLENT!! I am definately going to do that - as well as the towel. I know that I have ruined a few towels at home and do not want to do that. I will most likely break down and check my suitcase. We are taking several flights IN Europe and I did not want to have to but it is not the end of the world eh?

Dawn,
That's pretty much WHY I'm checking bags. Just kidding. We're gone for 11 weeks. I'm gonna need to color. |
okay...I want to know where you are going for 11 weeks!! :-)
|
Don't forget the plastic gloves!
|
We start with about five weeks in London, then a week each in Madrid and Paris. After that, it's two weeks in a house in Tuscany, with another 10 days or so back in London before heading home.
My husband will be working, and my little boy and I are going along for the ride. I look forward to reading all about your trip, Dawn. You certainly have thought through all of the angles! |
Remember, Momdd, that if you can't rinse out the dye good enough you will smell like ammonia for a few days!
