bouillabaisse in cassis or marseille

Bouillabaisse in Provence

Hi,
We are off to Provence for a week, staying Cassis. Does anyone have a recommendation for a delicious bouillabaisse either in Cassis or Marseille? I would appreciate an affordable restaurant ($40 per person).
Thanks, Yipper

Chez Fonfon is the place but remember to book in advance or you might be disappointed. L'epuisette is another famous restaurant in the same area as Chez Fonfon.

My husband and our friend ate a delicious bouillabaisse dinner at Restaurant Miramar, located at 12 Quai de Port. Since we were staying in the Vieux-Port area, we preferred to walk to and from dinner, instead of taking the taxi to Chez Fonfon or L'epuisette.

The bouillabaisse was made up of six different fish including monk fish, conger eel, scorpion fish, crab, mussel, and something else I can't remember. It was an interesting dining experience. They presented the platter of fish to us at our table before they took it back to the kitchen to make it into dinner. While the fish was cooking, the bouillabaisse broth was served along with small bread slices and a garlic herb paste, I think aiolli (sp?). Then the bouillabaisse was served. Both husband and friend really enjoyed the meal, although I think it was more about the whole dining experience. Desert was an incredible tiered tray of little desert cookies and cakes. The chef visited our table several times during our dinner, one of the times with complimentary limoncellos.

I would highly recommend Le Miramar for your bouillabaisse experience.

If you are going to Cassis, try L'Oustau de La Mar. The portion is big enough for two to three people. Cassis is beautiful!

Hi Cafegoddess,

Yes we are staying in Cassis for a week. I will look into this restaurant. We are renting an apartment and it is always nice to walk and not drive after dinner with wine. Any other suggestions are welcome.

Thanks, Yipper

Sounds like you should have it in both venues!

Cassis is so small that you can walk pretty much everywhere. Bonaparte, in Cassis, is known for their Bouillabaisse. We ate there and it was great. You need to make reservations a day ahead and tell them that you want the bouillabaisse. They serve a local white wine (made just up the hill from the town) that goes good with the dish. I don't know if Nino's, also in Cassis, serves bouillabaisse, but it is an excellent, elegant restaurant that we really enjoyed.

Thanks to all for your suggestions. When we return I'll let you know where we ate our bouillabaisse.
