Bored in Salzburg
 

Believe it or not, I was bored in Salzburg. I tried, really I did, to make it fun & interesting.

We were there 4 nights and the hotel, Bergland, was reasonably priced and the rooms was large and modern. The bathroom was also very spacious. The hotel, which serves breakfast only, was about 20 min. away from the city center. We got bus tickets so we often took the bus instead.

We saw the very interesting fortress, walked the town center many times, did the Mirabell gardens, stopped in the Augustiner Brewery and the Weisse, which is popular among the locals. We visited St. Giglen on Wolfgangsee (recommended) and did the Salzmine day trip. But the lack of flowers in the town center and the lack of street entertainment kept us from feeling the magic of the place.

We really liked the Hellbrunn fountain tour, with its magical fountains and historical pieces. I'd say that was the highlight for me, as well as the saltmines.

Am I the only one who failed to hear how the hills are alive in Salzburg?

Wait, there was another highlight that I failed to mention. Drinking Venetians on the rooftop bar of the Stein hotel in Salzburg,.

I lived in Salzburg for ten months. And, yes it can get boring.

I've been to Salzburg a few times through the years and have enjoyed the experience each time and, to my recollection, have never been bored there. Four nights, however, might be one night too long. Que sera.

I'm always bored stiff in Madrid. Everyone has differnt tastes.

I've spent 3 and 4 nights in St. Gilgen and didn't get bored. But I've never spent that long in Salzburg.

I guess different people have different expectations of what is interesting.

When were you there? I'm hoping I can visit Salzburg during the Salzburg Festival, so I'll be too busy attending performances and keeping my eyes peeled for celebrities on the streets!

Maybe 4 nights might start to get tiring, but I guess if you plan it, like we did, during the Music Festival, you get a lot more action and fun stuff to do, like hearing concerts up at the Fortress or in the courtyard of the Domkirche -- not just Mozart, but rock music as well. We loved the Salt Mine tour -- especially nice on a hot day; the Sound of Music tour was better than expected; but I have to say one of the highlights was hanging out with the locals on a hot afternoon at the Volksgarten pools. It was like going to a country club: our kid had fun in the kiddy pool and we had two other big pools to cool off in. There was a playground, a beer garden, and (well my husband really liked this part)topless sunbathing.

We did 2 nites in Salzburg and then 3 nites in St. Gilgen with a day trip to Hallstatt---that seemed to work.

I love Salzburg, one of the most physically gorgeous cities to me in Europe but I can see where jaded travelers may not find it all cracked up to be - and OP if Salzburg bored you do NOT go to Switzerland. where there are few street entertainers outside Zurich itself because they roll up the sidewalks at store closing times - around 7pm.

Four days/nights can be boring in any small city (Salzburg is not London/Rome/Paris)...I believe you should take a day trip or two outside of the city.....was in Salzburg in May...incredible day trips to Berchestgarden, Waffen (the castle where they filmed the classic movie "Where Eagles Dare", and Lake Mondsee and Hallstatt, dont confine yourself to a limited area, thats just sound advise,

Spent 9 days in Salzburg last time - will spend 5 nights there this year. I have never been bored there.

Loved Salzburg, was not bored - we were there 4 nights as well.

I loved the nearby Lake districts and was a highlight.

I enjoyed the Sound of Music Tour as well which takes almost a full day.

Sorry to hear that, Shuler. It must be awful to suffer boredom while traveling. In two 3-day visits, we did most of the things you mention, and were not bored. Then again, looking back over 60 years of worldwide travel, I can honestly say I've never been bored by a city, town, village or country...people, yes, both home and abroad.

From all of your past posts that I can recall, you seem to have found interesting things to report on everywhere. Maybe it was just Salzburg. Good thing there are several thousand options for your future travel. Go get 'em!

Never bored in Salzburg. Been there three times and love the city. Good food, good music and many sights outside of the city, including Linz, within easy reach of Salzburg. Enjoyed the Sound of Music tour. Did the two person sled down a mountain chute. A number of Mozart concerts, some were dinner concerts. Too bad you were boared, but don't stop traveling.

Ah, food. We ate well outside of Salzburg. In the town center, I found the food overpriced and not well cooked. I had Knodel twice and was both times disappointed.

Outside of Salzburg, we had a terrific typical Austrian dinner at reasonable prices.

I know, I'm sounding like a spoiled traveller but sometimes a trip doesn't meet expectations.

Having said that, Salzburg for 2 days is definitely worth while.
