I know this is an old thread, but I am bumping it up with gratitude to all those who provided these reading suggestions. I am in book heaven as I prepare for a trip to Italy this fall!

H.V. Morton's A Traveller in Rome. A detailed look at everyday Roman life in the 1950's. Been reading it slowly to savor it all summer.

and his "A Traveller in Italy" too.

Quite old-fashioned but some great glimpses into recent and less recent history.

from the same era, Love and War in the Apennines by Eric Newby is also a good read. [and apologies if this repeats above posts].

Eric Newby's wife, Wanda, also wrote a memoir, Peace and War: Growing up in Fascist Italy.

A few more for the list (check out the reviews) -

David Gilmour's The Pursuit of Italy

books by Philip Matyszak - start perhaps with his
Ancient Rome on Five Denarii a Day

Stephen Greenblatt's The Swerve: How the Renaissance Began

All this and no one mentioned The Monster of Florence?

That book is a great look into the provincial and idiotic Italian "justice" system. Anyone who believes Amanda Knox is guilty after reading that book (which is not about the Knox case) is off his head.

"The Venice Project" by Phillip Jones.

Caroline and Phil gave up their jobs in IT, and moved to Venice, where they make a living teaching English.

Phil has also written a Novel set in Venice. It will be published in March (approx) 2017. He might be the next Donna Leon.
