Do I take it from your reference to Kazantzakis that you're excluding "Report to Greco"? Kazantzakis grew up in Crete, and I really got a kick out of reading his memoir while on my first trip to Greece.

It isn't set in the islands, but Patrick Leigh Fermor's non-fiction travel book "Mani" (about the famous peninsula in the southern Peloponnese) is a classic of travel writing.

Other non-fiction entries: Dilys Powell's "The Villa of Ariadne" about the excavations of the Palace of Minos on Crete, or Charles Pellegrino's "Unearthing Atlantis" about the excavations at Akrotiri on Santorini.
