Bookmarking--good or bad?

Lately I've started reading posts that turn out to be one, two, even more years old, clicked to the last post and found "bookmarking" by someone who wants to save it to his/her "library." Thank goodness I remember to look at the date before posting a response to someone who's probably left the board long since. But somehow this feels wrong. When I search and find an old post that I like, I either mail it to myself or print it out to take with me. How do the rest of you feel about this practice? Bad, because it brings up old stuff and may cause posters to respond unnecessarily? Good, because it resurfaces useful information that's just as good as what's being newly posted? If it is a bad practice, is there anything we can/should do to try to stop it?

I don't understand why some posters would post a reply to an old thread with the words "Bookmarking". Am I missing something here? Is there a copyright infringement that I am no aware of such that this is necessary?

If I needed to bookmark a thread that I find useful, I do so without having have to top-it-up by unecessarily posting on it. I simply just save the url address, which I think is a good thing in case the information on the thread is updated by other posters.

Or, just like you, I email the entire thread to myself and save it in my personal documents library.

Bookmarking an old post does not make good sense to me as I prefer other ways of archinving info, but I do not see it as a problem. Not everybody here is an expert at browsers, email, MS word files, etc, so if they have a system that works for them then I wish them happy travels.

Different people have different preferences and behaviors, and as long as they fit within the rules of decorum I'm ok. The only thing that really bothers me is attacks on other posters or replies.

There is no such thing as << may cause posters to respond>> Nobody forces anybody else to respond, and those that do so without looking at the history may do so in error.

For a current thread I that I have info about but no time to reply I will sometimes bookmark to come back to later that day or soon thereafter.

I don't think there's anything you can do about it, although I was a little confused by a bunch of responses to a post giving advice on places to stay or something, when the original question was over a year old. Maybe that was an example, although I'm not sure the word bookmarking is in it.

I don't know what this is even about or why topping a post is considered "bookmarking" by someone, but suspect it's someone who doesn't know how to save URLs or doesn't even understand what they are. I think, but am not sure, this is people who just top a post so that it will then show up when they click on their name, and they are calling that "bookmarking". Someone recently posted about how they were doing that and then realized the problem when they got carried away and now didn't want to see all these posts everytime they clicked on their name. You can't undo them once you do that.

I know it doesn't force anyone to respond, but it can cause someone to respond, I agree, because it's easy to miss the original year on the post when it is near the top of the queue.

I don;t see the reason for a "reply"..you can bookmark a thread without replying to it.

But you can find it quickly by clicking on your name if you have replied/bookmarked it.

Gretchen: understood BUT if you are bookmarking the post then why do you need to "find it quickly" by clickong on your name?

I thought the purpose of bookmarking was so you COULD "find it quickly" and without even having to come to this site to do so.

Seems like adding an unnecessary step to me.

I do it so I'm able to access pertinent threads when I'm not at my own computer.

Intrepid: "I thought the purpose of bookmarking was so you COULD "find it quickly" and without even having to come to this site to do so."

Bookmarking a thread by typing "Bookmarking" isn't the same as adding the link to one's bookmarks (or favorites). It is just a substitute for TTT or anything else so the poster can can find the thread by clicking on their name.

If the people who do this would figure out that clicking on the thread's title (thus bringing up the thread's URL) they could actually "bookmark" the thread on their browser, and not annoy people by topping old threads (and pushing other threads farther down).

Some folks "bookmark" so many threads it borders on rude . . . . . .

Oh boy.../:-)

stevefrat, I think that's why you'd want to e-mail it to yourself.
