Bookmark? for computer idiot
 

I keep reading that people bookmark a thread. Someone mentioned that there is somewhere you can do this at the top of the page (or toolbar?). I can't seem to find this. Apologies, as I am a computer idiot!!!!
Help?

At the toolbar (upper part of the screen) of the Internet Explorer ( or any other program you use) you have different options, File, Edit..one of them is for bookmarks (I use a Spanish one so it says "Favoritos" but I think it says "Bookmarks" in English). You click there and then to Add ..and you have a list of your favourite internet adresses :)

On Internet Explorer, the 4th option from the top right is Favorites.

While you have the thread on the screen, click "Favorites". Then the drop down menu will have "Add to favorites" as the first option. Click on that.

Then when you want to find the thread, click on favorites and you will see that thread or page listed. Just click on that and it will take you there.

oh, it's also "favorites"..I didn't know that, sorry !!

Hi rbnwdln, I have Internet Explorer and on my laptop (and all of my PC's before I purchased a laptop)the FAVORITE is the 4th over at the top of the screen from the left.

There is "File", then "Edit", then "View" then "Favorites. As Linda said, click on Favorites and then click on "Add to Favorite". After you start doing this (which is also called "Bookmarking") you can start putting the various websites in folders if you wish..designating the folders as to your preferance. Post back if you can't figure out how to do that. Something I need to do..plus deleting a lot of website I no longer want to keep. Best wishes.

Make sure, too, that you click on the title of the thread before you bookmark, otherwise you'll just be bookmarking the Europe forum.

I figured a poster added the bookmark reply to a thread so later they could click on their name to find posts they are interested in instead of adding the post to their favorites list.

Yeah - but after you've bookmarked a few dozen threads, you still have to search. Much better to add the thread to a Favorites/Bookmark list by right-clicking the title at the top of the right-hand column, then click the appropriate choice.

Another thing one can do is email the thread they are interested in to themselves.

The advantage to saving links to threads in the Favorites/Bookmarks is that they can be organized in a hierarchy, such as

1. Fodors
1.1 UK
1.1.1 London
1.1.1.1 Museums
1.1.1.2 Theaters
1.1.2 Edinburgh
1.2 France
1.2.1 Paris
1.2.1.1 Dining
1.2.1.2 Hotels
1.2.1.3 Museums
1.2.2 Normandy

... where the decimals represent subdirectories/folders. Then one doesn't have to wade through a lot of irrelevant stuff and can go straight to a particular reference.

I agree Robespierre, and I need to do that with my bookmarked website plus I need to delete a lot of them. A full days job I believe!

Thank you for bringing this up. I was getting really annoyed with all the "bookmarks" in Franco's threads. He provides some fantastic info but I couldn't figure out why everyone was typing in "bookmark" instead of "TTT". Apparently somebody doesn't understand how you actually bookmark in IE or Firefox.

One doesn't need to type "bookmark",if one just clicks on the right side of their mouse they will see "add to favorites", click that on and it will be added (bookmarked) in the favorite list. I was wondering about that also.

My browser offers "Bookmark this page" when I right-click. "Favorites" is a Gatesism.

For lucky Mac users, use the "CONTROL" key to add bookmark to favourites.

My filing system is similar to Robes': if I'm planning to travel to a destination/country, I set it up under my travel folder as:

Paris - Apts/Hotels
Paris - Entertainment
Paris - Practical
Paris - Restos

If it's a destination that I might/hope to get to I dump it under the country until later use.

If you use Internet Explorer, press CTRL "I" to open a window which can help to organize favorites/bookmarks that you've accumulated.

"Bookmark" is the terminology used by Netscape, which used to be THE browser of choice and had the advantage that it could be used as both noun and verb, hence its continuing popularity. When Microsoft effectively torpedoed Netscape it opted for "Favorites", which has no verb form.

I know how to add to favorites but how do I organize by bringing to the top the ones I use the most and isolate them from my france, film , books etc.?

Ohh, Neil, then that was my mistake, some time ago (years, in fact) I used to have Netscape on an English version :)
