Booking train tickets
Hi, I will be in Italy from May 23 to June 8. I have a timetable and hotels room booked for that period in a number of cities. I would like to book train tickets with seat reservations. Is there any way I can do this (cheaply) online? Any help would be appreciated.

PS the trenitalia site does not seem to accept reservations at this point.

Thanks

eteo

From my research, it is way cheaper to buy at the stations once you are in Italy

I have two opinions. First is that Jamikins is right - - just chill out and buy everything when you get to Italy on May 23. Save yourself money, and don't fret over buying train tickets so far before you get to Europe.

But the second opinion (for which I have no experience personally) comes from (at least one, maybe more) previous post(s), provided by one of the most respected "veterans" on this forum.

Excerpted from a recent post - - http://www.fodors.com/forums/threadselect.jsp?fid=2&tid=34405608

Aut hor: ben_haines_london
Date: 03/09/2003, 05:45 pm

...

Euraide, offices in Florida and Germany: http://www.euraide.de/. We booked all our train tickets in a travel agency at the Rome train station. No charge and he set up all reservations for our trips. The only problem he did not tell us our seats were reserved , but we found out when we got on the train and tried to sit anywhere there wasn't someone sitting. That shows how little we knew about the train system. When standing with your back to the main station door it is on the left side., near those exit doors.

Judya: you didn't actually book anything, you just bought tickets. On Intercity trains vooking seats is not required, although highly advisable. If you do not tell the guy on the toher side of the table that you want to reserve seats you pnly buy the ticket, which can be used on any train. So remember, always make it clear that you want to reserve the seats (prenotare!).
