I have hotels booked for next September. All three are very specifically where we want to stay and all are very small.
They can be cancelled u til right before, so I see no reason not to book them.

You already have your question answered, so my advice is unsolicited. Before booking the hotels, you might want to tweak your itinerary just a bit.
Rather than flying from Santorini to Rome, then down to the Amalfi Coast, then back up to Venice, this would absolutely be my first choice!
Fly to from Santorini to Naples, proceed to Amalfi Coast, bus/train to Rome, train to Venice.
If you feel you must go to Rome first, fly from Santorini to Rome, train/bus to the Amalfi Coast, fly from Naples to Venice. Usually, I would say trains, and I love arriving in Venice by train, but the distance is just far enough that flying might make sense. The airport in Naples is small and easy to navigate.

Hi
I didn't realise my question had been commented on again, never get notification but thanks all for the feedback. I didn't realise you could get a flight direct to Naples from Santorini(only want direct flights)but no problem, we will be staying in Rome for 5 days then head to Positano.
@sassafrass, i may consider flying to Venice, at this point, we had planned to train it there.
Thanks all.

One does not get notification from Fodors when there is activity on a thread. You need to check in now and then (like daily if you have current questions going) to see if anyone has commented.
