I use booking.com on a regular basis for 3 or 4 european holidays a year over the last 10+ years or so. I've yet to be let down.
I also find
1) sometimes booking direct is cheaper
2) if the place is small booking direct for the same price is an easy ethical decision, it gets harder as the direct price rises
3) I've tried hotels.com and find them weak in the areas I want to holiday
4) I also use google maps to find the smaller places and find the tool significantly better than booking.com for finding places but less useful overall
Over the last 35 years, however I've booked a hotel, a few things have gone wrong. This is seldom (once) due to the booking firm (local tourist office) nearly always the issue is down to the service provider (the hotel) being incompetent. I grew up in a hotel, the son of multiple hotel owners and I can tell when a hotel cocks up.

In my opinion, if they are aware that a property is no longer available, and that a listing forced a customer to receive a refund, Booking should be more pro-active about making sure the listing is removed, especially when the listing is a vacation rental.

check your original link. it is removed.
