book set in Paris or Riviera 1920s
 

Hi, I'm looking for books, either fiction or non-fiction, that are set in Paris or the Riviera during the 1920's. I am writing a book set in this era, but will also be travelling there next year to 'eye-ball' the areas I am writing about. Any suggestions of suitable books would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!!

Some of the books written by Hemingway was based in the Paris area. The other writers were from that period too. Gertrude Stein (spelling??)and a lot of the writers from that era. They were almost a "Rat Pack" from Paris in the twenties.

A lot of the bars from that period were the Dome, Select, and a few others which still exist. Montparnesse (sp?) is the area where the bars were situated.

A lot of Hemingway's books started with the group of writers in Paris who ended off to Spain together.

Good writing during the twenties. Google Gertrude Stein and you'll find a lot of information.

Start with A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway. I suggest that you go there before you start writing.

As mentioned above, *A Moveable Feast* is a good place to start.

Follow up with *The Sun Also Rises.*

And his rather strange *Garden of Eden.*

F Scott Fitzgerald's *Tender is the Night* especially for the Riviera.

Browse the biographies of either writer for another perspective on the goings on.

The Long Afternoon, by Giles Waterfield, is a beautiful novel about an English couple living on the Riviera between the wars.

"A Moveable Feast" great to read while staying in/ wandering the Left Bank!

"Living Well is the Best Revenge" about Sara and Gerald Murphy and their guests on the Riviera--Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Picasso, etc.
Also "They Were So Young" -- same subjects.

I loved Gertrude Stein's "Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas. It deals with that time and place. I think, but am not absolutely 100% sure that the title of the above-named book about Sara and Gerald Murphy is "We Were All So Young."
