Book: French Country Hideaways--anyone stayed at?
I am reading the book "French Country Hideaways". There are a few interesting looking places 20 to 30 miles inland from our planned 2008 trip route down the coast of Normandy, Brittany, etc to northern Spain. I'm not only wondering if any of you have stayed at any of these places, but if it would be stupid to drive inland just to stay in a special place.

I haven't read this book but I am happy to respond to the general question. To me it depends on how 'special' these places are. If they have some specific feature that appeals to you then it would not be stupid to go out of your way to stay there - 20-30 miles is not material in my view. My experience is that there are interesting places all over France and whereever you go there will be great plcases to stay. Are you looking at hotels to overnight? Or bases from which to explore the surrounding areas? A bit more information about what appeals to you would make it easier for people to respond.

If only 20 miles from the coast, I guess I would be looking for an overnight.
If closer to Chinon and the western Loire, then I would spend two nights and try to see a chateau.
Places I have earmarked in the book: Chateau et Jardins de La Ballue, Chateau des Reaux, Chateau de la Flocelliere. It may be as you say--there are special places everywhere in France and I should just try to narrow down something very close to my route.

I stumbled on this gorgeous book in our College library. So I feel like I have at least saved myself the cost of the book....
Have booked 2 divine-looking places (when on vacation, I tend to splurge!) in Normandy this October (Chateau la Thillaye and Manoir de Thionville). They were close to where we want to tour and I like knowing where I will end up in the evening after a long drive around the country side. Both places were very prompt and helpful with the reservations and sent me brochures etc.
Last time we were in France we hit a long weekend and almost ended up sleeping in the car....also we wasted a whole day of our vacation enquiring and worrying about a room...NOT fun!...and ended up in a very touristy and overpriced hotel...never again!
