Hallo both Bettyann and mitdoac, i just returned from my cruise trip in Katakolo. of course, i visited Olympia, but not with the train, i had booked a car from AVIS ( www.katakolo-rentacar.com) I knew already from some friends who had visited Olympia in the past that there is no need for a guide (too expensive and not necessary) and they suggest me to have a car there so i followed their advice. train station is quite far and where the train leaves you in Olympia is not close to the ruins either, but we did find a free parknig just outside the entrance, plus we didn't have to worry for missing our tain. we also visited Agios Andreas beach (on the way back, just 5 minutes driving from the port of Katakolo) and Mercury winery (both recomended from AVIS staff). The winery was very impressive. as for Agios Andreas beach, although the weather was not good for swimming, we enjoyed our Greek coffee in a nice anfitheatric cafeteria with amazing seaview.
don't worry about having a car as it is very easy and smooth driving to Olympia. AVIS staff will also give you a map, directions and all the details you will need, their English were just excellent.
hope i helped!
