The Park Hotel Laurin is number one in Bolzano, two blocks from the train station and one block from cental Piazza Walther. There are a couple of other very good hotels in town, both on Piazza Walther itself (the Grifone and the ..... (don't recall the name)

The Luna-Mondschein is another possibility

My wife and I stayed at the Park Hotel Laurin a couple years ago and it was probably the nicest place we stayed in the two weeks we were in Italy. We had a magnificently large room with a huge marble bath. Unfortunately, it was also very expensive - about $400 for the night back when the exchange rate was considerably more favorable. They do have less expensive rooms, but I'm not sure how much less expensive.

Although we did not eat there, the restaurant looked fantastic - but also expensive with most entrees well over $30 at that time.

If you're going to be in Bolzano, don't miss the archaeological museum, with Oetzi, the "ice man."

Haven't stayed here but we are looking at the Stadt Hotel Citta for next year. www.citta.sudtirol.com

We stayed there last year. Very nice hotel with large rooms. We had a fabulous lasagne dish in the restaurant. I second the recommendation about visitng the "ice man" museum. There is a self service laundromat in Bolzano you can use if you'd like. Also, you can rent bikes at the park behind your hotel for free; you just need to leave your passport number with the attendant. We got some nice tablecloths for cheap at the outdoor market in town. Lots of nice restaurants. One of our favorite cities we visited. Be sure to make it to Lake Carezza. Gorgeous. Right across the hotel you can get a delicious "Coca Cola" gelato. One of the best! Also there is a little stand nearby selling a wondeful "donen kebap" (sp?) sandwich. (A huge gyro-like sandwich- a meal in itself!). We ate there twice. Have fun.

Friends have stayed at the Grifone and highly recommend it. It September I will also be in Bolzano. We are staying at the Hotel Hanny which is about a 15 minute walk into town along the river. We are taking 1/2 board (breakfast and dinner) and I think that it is 140 euros. Their restaurant serves organic produce from a nearby farm...it looks nice and they have been quick to reply to e-mails. [email protected]
