bolzano and dolomities
 

Hi,

I'm looking to travel to Verona and Bolzano early March. Does anyone know what the weather is like there ?

I'd like to go hiking if the weather allows this...has anyone hiked this area and are able to tell me which routes are not too difficult but give us a scenery ??

Any tips for restaurants and hotel (cheapish plse) would be appreciated :-)

we were there several years ago in late August, however. We had snow up in the mountains. The trip from Verona to Bolzano was a great trip. we are not hikers so I can't help you out there. while in the Dolomites we stayed at a small hotel in San Vito. It has a tourist office with maps. We traveled further north than Bolzano and stayed in Merano. The Brenta Massif is specatular. Don't miss cortina d'Ampezzo. There was adrive we took that went there from where we were and it was great. I've used the Michelin Green guide to Italy because I've followed the driving tours they've suggested. Enjoy your trip.

I'm just wondering how to get to San Vito, did you drive or used local transportation ?
We want to use the local transportation as it'll be much easier given the weather at around this time.

ML - March is still more ski-season than hiking season - but you can still do some great walks with the right footwear.

I was there in March a couple of years ago and spent a glorious day in the Alpe di Siusi area in the snow. This is gorgeous walking country - especially the area around Saltria.

Alternatively you could go up to the Val Gardena area for more spectacular Dolomite scenery.

The lifts in both areas will be open if you want to go up to one of the refuges for lunch ...

This information certainty helps, i was concerned that the trails might not be passable because of the snow.

Did you get a chance to ski when you were there ?? just wondering if it would be possible to hire skis for the day and spend one day skiing :-)

We drove with a rental car. It's some of the most beautiful scenary I've seen. The full name of the town is San Vito di Cadore. It was part of a road trip we got from the guidebook [Michelin] from Bolzano to Cortina D' Ampezzo. It's called the Dolomite Road. According to the book it's 131 mi. But from the other postings March may not be the month for it.

I'm not a skiier - but you can certainly hire skis for a day in any of the ski resorts.

The main resort for this area is Selva Gardena. You can find info on this area on:

(One of the world championship runs - Saslong - is in nearby S. Cristina ...)

Sorry one last question, do you know how I can get from Bolzano to Saltria ? Is there somewhere I can catch the local bus ??

With all of the research that I've been doing I'm being to think it might be more fun to just go to the alps and maybe spend a day skiing there and another day walking around the area.

ML - In March the best way to get there is bus-chairlift-bus.

From Bolzano:

- catch the Selva Gardena bus as far as Santa Cristina.
(In Santa Cristina ask for the Monte Pana chairlift stop ...)

- take the Monte Pana chairlift (- 200m walk from bus stop)

- at the top there is an hourly skiers bus to Saltria.
