Fear of driving in the Dolomites may be overblown. Roads are very well maintained, driving speeds are low. The payoff is stupendous views and access to points that are not realistic/possible as day trips from Castelrotto using public trans. Some people have trouble with motion sickness riding on buses.

FWIW, my husband and I are in our 70s.

They are nice but I drove through a lot of fog and rain one time in the pass just east of Val di Gardena. Went slowly, cleared up after a few kilometers.

When it's raining a lot , avoid driving if you can, of course.
