Hi!
My husband and I will be going to Bologna for a week or so in May and would like any recommendations on what area to stay and possible day trips from there that you have loved?
We love food and wine;history and great scenery.
Thanks for any help-not exactly on many tourist tracks!

Bologna has lovely pasta & cheeses, and great produce in its markets. It is not in an area known for its wine, or for its scenery. If you like beautiful scenery it is an easy day trip to Brisighella by train. The neighboring lovely small city of Modena has some legendary restaurants (and slightly different food) and can be a very nice day trip for lunch.

Bologna overflows with history, as does neighboring Ferrara and the even more spectacular Ravenna, reacheable by train. Other day trips that are easily done by train are Parma, Milan & Florence.

Generally speaking it is nicest & quietest to stay in the "lower half" of Bologna. Look at a Google map and pick a place to stay that is very near the piazza Maggiore or south of it.

Bologna is also a university town...some parts of the city are
filled with students.
We liked Bologna very much..made a day trip Florence.

We loved our stay in Bologna two years ago. We stayed at the Art Hotel Orologio and loved its location and our pleasant stay there. We would happily return.

We did a day tour from: http://www.italiandays.it and loved it. The young man who runs the company and the leads the tour was very enthusiastic about his passion for locally produced food. We learned a lot and had a great time.

Great town!

Please make sure you include Ravenna in your planning. It was THE highlight of the trip.

I think I used just a general Michelin Green Guide for Italy when I went to Bologna about three years ago. But I cross-referenced with online research.

I was solo and stayed here, great location, walked everywhere:
