Is flying Ryanair a bad thing? We are flying Ryanair from Pisa to Frankfurt soon.

Ryanair is not a bad thing, at all. It is a budget airline, with all that implies. Check in early or lose your flight, small carryon allowance, no extra services, etc. I has always worked for me -- got me there on time and safe.

We will have more than the allotted luggage for carryon. Is the charge really high for the overage? Is there a total limit for kilos?

The baggage allowance is very strict (well depending on the airport). I was hit hard in Brussels and Salzburg - but not in Dublin or Stanstead - and this was with exactly the same baggage.

Carry on is 10 kilos. Check in is 15 kilos. To check a bag in is either 7 or 10 euros - depending if you pay in advance or not. Every kilo over the 15 kilos is 8 euros. I had 21 kilos (ski gear etc) so that was 10 + (6x8) = 58 euros.
I flew Brussels to Dublin - got charged the 58 euros. T
hen flew Dublin to Stanstead - didn't get charged -
then Stanstead to Graz - didn't get charged and
then Salzburg to Brussels - did get charged.

You have to be careful - those kilos really do add up - particularly if you are taking a few flights.

You forgot to include the charges per checked bag of €10 per bag (€4.50 if selected at time of booking) - and watch their little bit of fun they have if you don't have any checked luggage at time of booking - they decide that you MUST want priority booking & online checkin and so will automatically charge you for that (€3) unless you find out how to remove it - and of course the CC usage charge of €2.50 per seat per flight.

And you cannot share baggage allowances - so if the husband has a bag of 20KG, and the wife one of 10KG, you will be charged for 5KG of excess baggage.

They use every trick in the book, and some they invented to remove passengers from their money. Having said that, if you know the charges, can be flexible when traveling (to take advantage of their silly sales) and you follow the rules to the letter, then bargains can be had (I flew from London to Sicily return for less than £20 last year).
