So your bank charges you to deposit a check to your own account, but does not charge when you withdraw money from an ATM in another country? Just curious.

And for the Germans here, that may not be aware of what they can do with a free "Postbank Sparcard". You can use it 10 times a year on any foreign VISA capable ATM. No fees at all and the interbank rate as well. Just get 3 or 4 cards should you need more withdrawals. I'm currently owning 4 of them. Looks like there's no max. amount that you can get. It's almost like in the good old "Sparbuch days", when you were looking for the next post office once you arrived, just much better. No need for pre-ordering withrawal coupons if you go to Italy either. :D

Foreign check or travelers check = charge
German check = no charge Getting money from foreign ATM, just as written above. |
Using an ATM in € countries = no charge either, but this depends on the bank you use. (Either
DiBA or DAB). Since both bank accounts a free (without any regular fees), you just get them all. :D |
Neo, you're right - we withdrew 300 euros. That must be it.

Here is an Article I found that covers how to get around those ATM fees...and Bank of America seems to be a good choice.

pinkyfin - interesting article, but irrelevant in Spain.

My husband was in Spain at the begining of May, where he used our BofA ATM card at Barclays ATMs in Madrid.
The statement has just arrived, and he was not charged fees, just like when he uses the card at Barclays in London. For what it's worth. |
Yes, but phyllis, maybe his account is like mine -- a "premier" type account which exempts me from the first two ATM charges per month regardless of where they are. I wasn't charged the first two times I withdrew from Deutschebanks in Italy either, but was after that.
