Bob The Navigator--HELP
What's the best way to get from Lake Garda to Stresa? Also, what is the name of the hotel you like in Stresa or that general vicinity.
Thanks for your help....... Susan |
Hmmm ! Are you driving? If so, be sure to run the viamichelin program. It is an easy shot and all Autostrada.
What is your budget? Would you consider Lago Orta only :45 away. I really need more info to answer well. |
Hi Bob,
We're not driving. I was hoping for a train or bus but now our plans have changed and we will reverse our plans & will go from the airport (MXP) to Stresa. Do you have a web site for the train info? Is this the best way to get there? We don't have a hotel planned yet but know we want to stay in or near Stresa because of the easy access to ferries, etc. Thanks for any and all help! Susan |
Sorry, didn't answer about the budget. Around 100 Euro a night for the hotel.
Thanks |
Susan - There is an occasional bus service from Malpensa to Stresa (Apr-Oct), with departures at:
- 07.30 - 10.30 - 14.30 - 17.30 - 20.30 Here's the link: http://www.safduemila.com/ita/orari/estate/alibus.pdf If those times are not convenient, the best way by public transport is to catch the shuttle bus from Malpensa to GALLARATE (- the nearest railway station) - from where there are trains to Stresa. For all train timetables see: www.trenitalia.com Hope this helps ... Steve |
Thanks Steve--you know those public transport scenarios. Susan, I would go to www.stresa.net to look for hotels. In that price range look at the Primavera in the main part of town near the old church. Good luck !
|
Steve, Thanks for the websites for the bus and train. Now we know our options.
Bob, We wondered about the Primavera as opposed to the Italie et Suisse, but we had heard that one was noisy, being on the street and across from a cafe. So, the Primavera is a better location? More questions: Is there a bus from Stresa to Cannobio or would it be better to take the ferry? Also, where would we go to catch the train that goes across the Centovalli? Would Locarno be best? I've heard that's really beautiful. Thanks again......... |
Take your pick ! Some have complained about church bells at the Primavera but they never bothered me--I am a good sleeper.
Once at Stresa, use the ferry for transport around the lake. Get the details while there, but I think you buy a RT ticket and boat to Locarno and then you bus home from Domodossala. We found the gradens at Villa Taranto to be superb, but so are the ones on thr Isles. Have fun ! |
Oh yes, be sure to stop at the deli/wine store about 6 doors from the Primavera for good picnic stuff and terrific wine selections. We ate at a place named Papagallo, but have one meal at Hotel Verbano on Isola Pescatori. Try the lake trout.

We were in Stresa area last September and stayed in Baveno, but next year are planning on spring. Would May be too early to go? I usually like to travel before school lets out and the families are vacationing. But we could also go in June if the weather would be better.
I don't think the church bells would bother me a bit. In fact, I love hearing them. Not something we hear at home! Thanks for the recommendation on where to buy the picnic stuff and wine. We do love our wine! Also love trout and will give it a try. Susan |
Suesnothome, May is not too early. It will be sunny, and days will be warm, but not hot. I think you will enjoy yourselves a lot!
buon Viaggio, BC |
If you take the train from Locarno to Domodossala, be sure to sit on the left side of the train. The views are much, much better on that side.

Thanks Bookchick & Prizren!
It's always fun to plan another trip!! |
