...How terribly exiting...

Unfortunately Firefox will not point out errors if the word is incorrect in the context but the spelling is correct :-)

When I first used the Firefox, spelling thing, I noted the red underlining but couldn't work out how you got to the correct version.
You right click on the underlined word and it gives you a choice of correct spellings, together with the option of adding to dictionary.

Momliz Feb 21st, 2009 04:00 AM

actually, with a Mac, you press the splat key (command) and + to increase font size.

I am getting to like the new site more as I get used to it, and as Katie and her people work out the details, but one thing, sarastro - we are being dragged into the 21st century, but the platform they are using still seems to be a proprietary one. On looking at the source code, I see no xml, xhtml, no w3c, none of the headings that I would expect in a truly modern site. This is what I see in the first line of the Washington Post index page: <blue> <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> </blue> here there's none of that. But, I am by no means very knowledgeable about web design or html, so maybe there's a good reason... One can only hope.

Sure wish there was a preview so one could preview html formatted stuff...

Grazie lateday and others,
Katie was kind enough to email me and explain some of the basic infrastructure reasons that made the change a must. I agree that they are being responsive and it is getting better each day. I will keep the faith.

<B>easytraveler</B> - Hopefully your question has been answered. In addition to using CTRL (I forget the Mac equivalent) along with the + and - keys to change page font size, you should be able to hold CTRL while rolling the mouse scroll wheel. However some mice do not have a scroll wheel in which case the + - keys work fine.

Sarastro Feb 21st, 2009 07:16 AM

One additional point - if you do see a word underlined with RED dots, place your mouse cursor over the word and use the right mouse click. You should see a list of suggested corrections. It's also possible to add words to this dictionary (such common foreign words or place names used on a form) which may not be found in an English dictionary.

For those who may be new to the Firefox browser, take a look at the "Tools" tab on near the top of the window. Click here, then select "Add-ons". You should see "Browse all add-ons", click here and try a few of the selections. If you do not like what the add-on does it's simple to remove.

Some of my favorite Add-ons:

1. Dictionaries (in more than English)

2. Ad Block plus - strips advertisements from your web pages

3. Foxmarks - synchronizes bookmarks on any machine you use. Save a bookmark on your laptop, it will be there the next time you use your desktop. Really superb for research website neat and tidy.

Don't like the new format at all. I feel lost in here...hellooooo....anybody out there????

Sarastro Feb 21st, 2009 07:29 AM

<B>Momliz</B> - It's been some time since I have done any HTML coding but I agree, web design should be W3C compliant. Using a proprietary platform may cause problems with older browsers and could be contributing to the frustration if that's what has been done. This might be a good question for the techs.

Overall however, I find the efforts to improve the website worthwhile and personally really like what has been done so far. I (as well as others) have been reassured that at a Preview/Edit function is in the works and would be a very welcomed addition the the new format.

Momliz Feb 21st, 2009 07:53 AM

yes, so far, I like it as well. Except, frames did have some good points - I liked being able to scroll through part of the age while the other stayed as is. But, we need to keep up with the times.

However, I do wish there was a way to improve the tagging search function - when you search by a tag - I'm in Europe, and I want to see pages tagged Albania. Previously, the left hand pane would have all the threads tagged Albania - now it remains Recent Activity, so you have to use your browser's back button. Not a big deal but tedious.

Bob~ Please don't go. I'm not crazy about it either, but if all the regular posters jump ship... it's gonna be even worse!

Why on earth would anyone be using AOl's horrible browser. And I hope no one here is still paying for AOL. It is now a free service.

Do yourself a favor, download and install Mozilla here:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/

If you have AOL software on your computer, remove it all...you don't need it any longer, unless you are still using their dial-up service (which is awful).

You can access your AOL email by going to http://www.aol.com

Hi Ira
"Because some of us are getting older and can;t see the itty bitty print any more."

good answer !
the letters are huge when I use Firefox, but just the same as before with Safari . Strange.
I know one can adjust the size of letters on the Mac - I would rather not fiddle around just for Fodor's.
Oh well...

Sarastro - my favorite Firefox add-on is Scrapbook. It saves pictures of full pages and allows you to organize them like bookmarks. Very useful if you think it is a page where the URL may disappear or change at some point, like news articles sometimes do.

LaurenKahn1 Feb 21st, 2009 06:14 PM

For those of you having the "slows", you might want to change your ISP. I had broadband. It was fine when it started, but, as more people signed up, there were shades of dial up. Wait, wait, wait.

I just hooked my TV's, phone and internet up to FIOS and everything runs very fast now. I have had no problems with the new format. I know I am in a minority here, but I actually like it better than the old format.

adrienne Feb 21st, 2009 06:20 PM

Lauren - I'm already using FIOS. It's this site that is slow. I see a noticeable difference from 3 days ago.

Sarastro, you discovered the hard way yesterday afternoon that the HTML tag <strike>strike</strike> doesn't work (3 strikes and you're out).

That's the original tag, and the one that's in my HTML guide. But while Fodor's doesn't allow it, they <i>do</i> allow <s>, which originated as an abbreviation for <strike>. So strangely, Fodor's allows the abbreviation, but not the original form of the tag.

Let's try it:
Using "strike": <strike>strikeout</strike> (no go)
Using "s": <s>strikeout</s> (works)

It's all listed on my page, "Formatting and special characters in Fodor's posts", at:

http://ljkrakauer.com/tags.htm

(I hope this works as planned, without a Preview function.)

Larry

Sarastro Feb 22nd, 2009 05:34 AM

<B>Larry</B> - Thanks for the guide. I was hoping no one would notice my strike error.

In reference to your excellent guide, is it still necessary to type special characters using basic HTML coding? Typing directly from my keyboard (no leading ampersand) the following characters seem to work: &, €, é, <

Another technique to display special characters which I do not think has been mentioned is to simply access the operating system's character map which should be available on all Windows, Linux, or Apple computers. All character map entries appear to work.

easytraveler Feb 22nd, 2009 12:01 PM

sarastro: thank you! Yes my question has been answered! :)

Thank you also for the further tips! It's always nice to be able to do more things with my computer!

Momliz Feb 22nd, 2009 12:17 PM

for anyone on a mac, one of my favorite widgets is Character Pal, from Taco widgets. It gives you the keyboard shortcuts to all kinds of neat symbols - let's see how these work (hard WITHOUT A PREVIEW FUNCTION!!)

? ? ? I just picked a few...
