Boats on Lake Como

Does anybody know??? Do these boats (that take you from Como or Varenna to Bellagio, etc) run during the winter? If not, how do we get to Bellagio from Milan (train to Como or Varenna, then we planned to take the boat; are there busses? Busses directly from Milan?)

The ferries and hydrafoils are used by the residents, and run all year. Take the train from Milan to Como (hourly or even more frequent service from the central station), and either a bus, ferry or hydrafoil to Bellagio. If I remember correctly the busses depart from in front of Como's train station, and the ferries and hydrafoils from the docks which are a few minutes walk from the station.
We found it quicker to take the train from Milan to Varenna. From Varenna you can catch the ferry to Bellagio.
I agree with Anna: we also found it quicker to take the train from Milan to Varenna, then the ferry (a 5-10 minute ride) to Bellagio....and vice versa on the way back. We were there in September and ferries between Varenna and Bellagio ran about every hour. I agree with the other poster -- the residents use these ferries for transportation, so they will run all year long, however maybe not quite as frequently. When you get to a town on Lake Como, there will be a posted ferry schedule by the docks. If you'd like to see our photos of Bellagio, visit our travelogue at http://www.lunadesigns.com/travels/.

There is year round ferry service.
We took the train from Milan to Verenna and the ferry from Verenna to Bellagio in September. We wrote all about it in our Italy 98 travelogue which you can find on our non-commercial web site, TheTravelzine.com, <http://thetravelzine.com>
