Boat from Stockholm to Copenhagen?
 

Does anyone have info on availability of taking a boat/ferry/ship from Stockholm to Copenhagen? I'd like to try that in late August 2007.

I've read that a train takes 5 hours, so I'm wondering how long a boat/ship/ferry would take.

I could not find any ferries that take that route. And - if they did it would take much longer than 5 hours (since you have to go south, east and then north all the way around Sweden.)

There is a Copenhagen to Oslo ferry, and Stockholm to several destinations, but not Stockholm to Copenhagen. This is a fairly comprehensive listing:

For the Stockholm - Copenhagen route, there is an overnight train from Stockholm to Malmo and then there's a local train across the water to Copenhagen.

Thanks to you all. My research reached the same conclusions. No boat from Stockholm to Copenhagen. Weird. I guess everyone flies or rails between those cities.

There is no economic reason to run a ferry at this relation (train or road transport is cheaper and faster for both passengers and goods), and the coast is not spectacular enough for a tourism oriented scheduled boat service.

Its been many years since I took the train from Stockholm to Copenhagen, but when I did, the train moved onto a ferry for the crossing, and passengers could go top-side during the trip. Hope that helps!

The ferry has been supplanted by a bridge several years ago.

Just one point - the ferry didn;t go from Copenhagen to Stockholm - it just took the train across to Malmo - almost all of the trip was still on land.

An alternative, if you're desperate to go via boat, would be Copenhagen to Gothenberg (which I think has a high speed ferry - ?Lynx?), then the train from Goteborg to Stockholm. I'd be amazed if it were only 5 hours though.

There is no ferry from København to Göteborg. Even a very fast ferry will travel at only 30-40 mph or half the speed of most long-distance trains.

There are many car/train ferries between Helsingor (Denmark - about 30 mins north of Kobenhavn) and Halsingborg (Sweden) - they take 20-25 mins to cross.

A long distance train travels (in most western European countries) at about 160 km/h = 100 mph, so it is rather factor 3.

Well, since no ferry from Stockholm to Copenhagen, we've decided to do the roundtrip "cruise" from Stockholm to Helsinki & back. It only gives 8 hours in Helsinki (less than I'd like), but is only about $20 more than the one way to Helsinki, so it cuts the cost of "hotel" to about $150/ni by doing 2 nights on the ship. Plus, the activities on the ship, esp for kids, sound delightful. I'll let you know how it goes when I return in Sept.

Sure, do let me know how your trip to Helsinki go because Helsinki is one place on our list to go to, and we like to drive while on holiday in Europe.

Bluesea: I'm just the opposite, I prefer not to drive. Just like to stay put and soak in a city, or else take trains. But, if the environs beckon requiring a car, we'll get one. I'll post after the trip.
