Ira - No 1 is a TRAM, not a bus.
Tillie - The tram stop is at the far side of Piazza Garibaldi near the Garibaldi monument (- towards Hotel Palace) as you leave the station.
Get tickets from ANM kiosk in the piazza - and validate them on boarding.
Hope this helps ...
Steve
P.S. If you go by taxi, a word or warning -
Fix the fare in advance to avoid nasty surprises.

Also have some change in your pocket so that you can buy the tickets for the ferry as there are lots of beggars at the ferry ticket office and they get reaallly close to you when you queue...avoid having to open money wallet near them.

There is an express bus that goes from the airport to Piazza Municipio, and you can walk just as described above. It stops at the train station -- I guess it's the same bus mentioned from the train station. When we arrived at the airport, near luggage claim was a booth that sold the tickets and told us which bus it was. There was room for luggage on the bus as well.
