Boat cruise in Switzerland
I plan to take boat from Geneva to Montreux. Anyone has tried the cruise before. How's the experience. Is the cruise covered by Eurail pass?

I also think of getting on the cruise on Lake Luzern. I believe the boat ride is not covered by Eurail pass. Is it worth the money? Should I save the money and take mountain excursions?

Any other boat cruises that worth taking?

thanks in advance

Dear Jacqueline
I took a boat from Geneva to Lausanne and really enjoyed it. I always love boats. We also travelled on Lake Luzern the Zurichsee but the one I enjoyed most was Lake Brienz from Interlaken to Brienz. All these boats were normal local services and were covered by the Swiss Rail Pass. I don't know about Eurail, I'm afraid.
Rosemary

All of Lakes Geneva, Lucerne, Thun and Brienze steamers are free with Eurail, and all are well worth the trips. Geneva to Montreux is quite a long trip, about 5 hours. If you find this a bit too long on the day, you can hop off at Laussane and continue to Montreux by train. Most of the steamers have bars and diners.
Another nice evening cruise is Lausanne across the lake to Evian les Bains in France for Dinner, about 40 minutes each way.

We took the boat from Chateau de Chillon to Lausanne. We enjoyed the trip. It was warm enough in July to sit on the outside deck and relaxed while watching the vineyards go by. We used Eurosaver pass and the conductor comes around checking the pass just like on a train.

My wife and I will be in Geneva for just 3 days... (August 20 and leave on Wednesday August 23) I definately want to take at least one boat cruise on the lake. I was thinking of going to Montreux spend time walking around there and going to the castle,,, However the 5 hour boat ride may be too much time,,, Are there faster boats, perhaps private tours..?

Or does it make sense to take boat to another place and take the train to Montreux from there and return train that evening to Geneva?

HELP!!!

Michael,
You can check out all of your cruise/train options by going to www.rail.ch. Click on "Timetables", enter your destination information, and then go to the bottom of the page and click on "All available carrier options." Go to the bottom of that page and click on "boat only." You'll get the schedule for the ferries. You might have to play around with various departures points to get the right mix of rail/cruise options, but it's fun research. Two possibilities to catch the ferry might be Lausanne or Vevey. you might also get information at www.lake-geneva-region.ch, click on "Themes," and go to the boat/cruise area.

Good luck.
s

Michael,
ps
Also look at www.cgn.ch (the ferry-line website). The English-language portion is under construction, but the French portion has timetables.

s
