Bloomsbury Hotels
Hi Folks
Looking for views on these hotels for a 21 to 24 July stay in London Morgan, Bonnington, George, Mentone or Ridgemount. Any other suggestons welcome as well. We're middle-aged and prefer hotel with lift and quiet. Thnaks in advance for your views. Mike |
I liked the Holiday Inn Bloomsbury. It fits your basic requirements and the room was pleasant and good-sized for London.

Mike, I stayed in the Ridgemont years ago. The location on Gower Rd was near a bus stop and very convenient. The owners were wonderful. The hotel was really more like a B and B in feel. I also remember a huge breakfast which made anything more than soup at lunch an impossibility. I am not sure about an elevator, but I the hotel can give you this info (I take the stairs any time I can as a "fitness" thing).

I've stayed at the Bonnington twice, both times at a pretty deeply discounted rate. It was a solid London 3 star, nothing fancy, great location. There is a lift. It's small.
Someone here gave the Morgan quite a nice review not too long ago. I looked at their website and it looked lovely tho I recall it says there is no lift. |
I just stayed at the Ridgemount two weeks ago (and I posted a favorable review at Tripadvisor when I got home). It was a great place to stay and I'd recommend it. A very sweet, friendly small hotel with just enough wear at the edges to make it charming. Very conveneint to transportation, restaurants & shops. It was reasonably priced and included full English breakfast. The rooms were a nice size for a British hotel and while the bathrooms were a bit small, they weren't as tiny as others I've been in. The proprieters were wondefully friendly, if they saw you walking out the door in the morning they always made sure you knew how to get to wherever you were going. A cosy TV lounge in the front offered free tea & coffee, soda vending, internet access for £1, and shelves of paperback books to borrow. No elevator, so if stairs are an issue, ask for a ground floor room. We did get just a bit of street noise since our room faced directly onto Gower Street, but it was not a big problem.
Also, about 12 years ago I stayed at the Ruskin Hotel in Bloomsbury across the street from the British Museum, it was really nice also and they have a lift, their only drawback was no TV in the rooms, if you wanted to watch, there was a lovely TV lounge near the lobby, but none in the sleeping rooms. |
Hotels or B&Bs? I believe the Mentone is a B&B (even though the name says Hotel). I've stayed there and liked it. I also recommend the Harlingford Hotel (also a B&B) in the same area.

We stayed at the Ivanhoe way back before it was renovated. It was quiet and very well located.

The Montague on the Gardens is a lovely Bloomsbury hotel with a lift. I've stayed there twice: once in a room on the garden side, and once in a room on the street side. The garden side room was the quietest hotel room I have ever stayed in. The street side room was not quite as quiet, but I had no trouble sleeping there, and I'm a light sleeper.
Rates at the Montague are somewhat higher than at the other hotels you mentioned, but it's often available at a discount on londontown.com. |
thanks everyone. We'll pick and proceed accordingly

Does anyone have any comments about The Buckingham Hotel, also in Bloomsbury?
Thanks |
Hi Mike:
We've stayed at both the Morgan and the Bonnington and liked them both. We've also stayed at other hotels in Bloomsbury. The Morgan is our favorite - though we always try to stay at different hotels. It is small (can't remember if there is a lift), quaint, right around the corner from the British Museum, wonderful breakfast - we loved it - nothing fancy, but just right! The Bonnington is a larger hotel, and although we were satisfied, it didn't have the same charm as the Morgan. To get more insight into both hotels, read our travel journals at: www.davidandcarol.com We have info on London from 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005. Hope this helps! Carol |
I've stayed at the George, not sure if it had a lift. It was quiet and I stayed in the basement. Nothing fancy, and I would only choose it if I was sure I wasn't spending much time in the clean, basic room.
